Ricky Hatton found dead at 46; family pay tribute

Former world champion boxer Ricky Hatton has died at the age of 46, his family said, with Greater Manchester Police saying there are not currently believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

"He had a heart as big as his smile, and his kindness, humour and loyalty touched everyone who was lucky enough to know him," the Hatton family said in a statement, adding that their loss was "immeasurable" and asking for privacy as they grieve.

Hatton, who won 45 of his 48 professional fights during a 15-year career, was world champion at light-welterweight and welterweight and remained one of Britain’s best-known fighters. He last fought professionally in 2012. The family described him as "so much more than a world champion" and said he was "simply 'Richard' to us: our son, a loving father, grandfather, and brother, and a true friend to many."

Greater Manchester Police confirmed officers had attended a home in Manchester on Sunday and said initial inquiries had not indicated any suspicious circumstances. The force did not provide further details on the cause of death.

Hatton rose from the amateur ranks to become a dominant presence in British boxing in the 2000s, carrying the nickname "The Hitman" and drawing large crowds at venues across the UK. His career included a notable victory over Kostya Tszyu in 2005 to claim the IBF light-welterweight title and high-profile fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2007 and Manny Pacquiao in 2009. He remained a prominent figure in the sport, later working as a trainer and public figure within boxing circles.

In their statement the family said they had been "deeply moved by the overwhelming outpouring of love and support" and that they would "take strength from one another and from the knowledge that Richard's legacy—both in boxing and as a man—will continue to live on." They asked for privacy "in the days and weeks ahead" while they come to terms with the loss.

Hatton's career, which included world titles at two weights and 45 wins from 48 bouts, made him a defining figure of British boxing in his era and a popular local hero in Manchester. Reaction from the boxing community and public figures was expected to follow as news of his death spread.

Further details, including any arrangements and formal statements from boxing organisations, were not immediately available. More information is expected as inquiries continue and as the family prepares to make further announcements.
