Rio Ferdinand says Andre Onana loan to Trabzonspor sends strong message as Manchester United clear-out continues

Andre Onana has agreed a season-long loan move from Manchester United to Turkish side Trabzonspor, a transfer that former United defender Rio Ferdinand said sends a clear signal about the club's new direction.

According to reports, all paperwork between the two clubs has been completed and the goalkeeper has approved the move. The deal does not include a loan fee for Trabzonspor and contains no option for a permanent transfer when the loan expires on June 30, 2026. Reports also say Onana will receive a pay rise through a signing-on payment and performance-related bonuses as part of the agreement.

The transfer was confirmed by journalist Fabrizio Romano, and it comes after two uneven seasons at Old Trafford for the Cameroon international, who joined United in 2023 for a fee reported to be around £47 million. United's decision to move Onana on was welcomed by Ferdinand on his "Rio Ferdinand Presents" podcast, where he said the club is determined not to keep players who are "not worthy of being at the football club anymore."

"They're not going to have players that either aren't good enough, haven't performed well enough or are not the right people to be at the football club," Ferdinand said. He added that the club's football operations, overseen by Omar Berrada, are making it clear they will not tolerate long-term retention of players deemed unsuitable. "He's not going to have them around like bad smells," Ferdinand said.

United have moved a string of high-profile players this summer as part of what has been described internally as a clear-out. Marcus Rashford joined Barcelona on loan, Alejandro Garnacho secured a reported £40 million transfer to Chelsea, and Jadon Sancho moved to Aston Villa on loan. Anthony made a permanent switch to Real Betis, while Tyrell Malacia remained at United. Other departures this window included Rasmus Hojlund, Victor Lindelof and Christian Eriksen, as the club reshaped its first-team squad.

Ferdinand said the outgoing business is as important as the incoming signings, arguing that clearing out players who do not fit will send a strong message to the remaining squad. "That side of it has been as important, if not more, than the incoming players," he said, adding that new recruits have brought "speed, dynamism, pace and goal threat" but that the removal of unwanted personnel is crucial to changing the club's culture.

The moves come as United attempt to rebuild under the stewardship of Ruben Amorim and the reorganised football operations structure. Club officials have framed the summer transfers as part of a wider push to modernise the squad and reset standards after seasons of inconsistent performances and off-field instability.

With Onana now en route to Turkey, United will rely on their remaining goalkeeping options for the season ahead while monitoring the goalkeeper's form in the Turkish Süper Lig. The loan arrangement leaves the door open for United to reassess Onana's future when the deal concludes next summer.
