Rory McIlroy wins Irish Open in playoff after clutch eagle on 18th; issues warning ahead of Ryder Cup

Rory McIlroy closed out the Irish Open in dramatic fashion on Sunday, sinking a 27-foot eagle putt on the par-five 18th to force a playoff and then defeating Joakim Lagergren on the third extra hole to secure his fourth title of the season.

McIlroy finished the final round at 17 under par after a 66 that carried him into the playoff with Lagergren. The 36-year-old reached the 18th green in two on Sunday and rolled in the long eagle putt — only the second three on the hole all day — to extend the tournament. The win was McIlroy’s first since his Masters victory five months earlier and came ahead of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth next week and the Ryder Cup later this month.

The playoff itself was tense. McIlroy and Lagergren each carded birdies through two extra-hole repetitions of the closing hole, but on the third replay Lagergren’s approach found the water. McIlroy made another birdie that could not be matched by Lagergren’s attempted chip for a four, ending the contest to a rapturous response from the home crowd.

McIlroy described the victory as exceeding his expectations and singled out the year’s significance. "I thought it would be a nice homecoming with a green jacket but this has exceeded my expectations. I am so happy to play the way I did and get the win. It is incredible," he said. "Moments like this are what you remember. I think 2025 will go down as one of the best, if not the best, of my career. But there is a lot still coming up, with Wentworth next week and then the Ryder Cup."

The final-round recovery was built largely on McIlroy’s putting. Over the course of the 66, he converted in excess of 160 feet of putts, including long conversions of roughly 38 and 42 feet within the opening five holes of the round. That hot streak on the greens offset occasional errant driving and allowed him to climb from four shots behind overnight leader Adrien Saddier to reach the playoff.

Luck also played a part during the comeback. McIlroy benefited from a putt that circled the 13th cup before dropping and from a wayward drive at the 15th that ballooned yet avoided trouble by inches.

The victory will be closely watched by Europe’s Ryder Cup team and their American opponents. McIlroy has been Europe’s leading figure this season and his return to winning form adds a formidable presence to the European side ahead of the biennial contest.

McIlroy’s success at the K Club extends a run of strong results in 2025 and offers momentum heading into a busy autumn on the European Tour and the high-profile team showdown that follows later this month.
