Roy Keane and Ian Wright clash again over Arsenal loss to Liverpool

Roy Keane and Ian Wright were involved in a heated on-air exchange after Arsenal’s 1-0 defeat to Liverpool, with the Ireland international urging criticism of the Gunners and Wright firing back about Manchester United.

The row unfolded on the Stick To Football podcast following Dominik Szoboszlai’s late free-kick, which decided a largely cagey contest before the international break. Several pundits had been critical of Arsenal’s conservative tactics, but Wright defended his former club, saying they had “hung in there” at Anfield.

Gary Neville, who prompted Wright for an assessment, appeared taken aback by that reply and pressed further. Keane interjected, citing examples of other teams who had scored against Liverpool — Bournemouth, Newcastle and Crystal Palace among them — and arguing Arsenal had been too passive.

Wright countered that Arsenal had approached the match differently and that a substitution might have come 10 minutes earlier, adding that Szoboszlai’s strike was a superb finish. Keane pressed Wright to be more critical, asking, “Are you still getting paid off by them? Are you still on the wage bill?” Wright replied: “No. I’m not going to be critical of them. If Szoboszlai doesn’t score a great goal it’s 0-0, it’s a point, and I would take that.”

The exchange escalated when Wright appeared to broaden his criticism to Manchester United, saying in an expletive-laden remark that the Red Devils were “fing s,” adding that United are routinely subject to critique. Keane has been a frequent and outspoken critic of United in recent years and has previously sparred with Wright on topics including Bruno Fernandes’s captaincy.

Keane and Wright have a history of robust disagreement in broadcast roles. In February they clashed over Fernandes’s captaincy after United came from 2-0 down to draw at Everton, with Keane arguing for stronger leadership in the dressing room and Wright defending the player’s influence. The pair also exchanged barbs in October 2024 over an anecdote from Keane’s managerial career, an argument that ended with Keane calling Wright “childish.”

Both men remain regular fixtures in British football media, where their contrasting styles — Keane’s blunt, often confrontational analysis and Wright’s measured defence of former clubs and players — frequently produce sharp debate. On this occasion, the disagreement centred on whether Arsenal’s away performance at Anfield merited sharper criticism or cautious defence.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will return from the international break to reflect on a defeat that leaves his side searching for consistent attacking output away from home. Liverpool’s victory was secured by Szoboszlai’s set-piece quality, while punditry fallout continued to focus on interpretation of the Gunners’ tactics and substitution timing.

Off-screen, colleagues say Keane and Wright maintain a cordial relationship despite regular on-air rows. Their exchanges underline the wider debate in football coverage about impartiality, former-club loyalty and the role of pundits in scrutinising teams with which they have strong playing ties.
