Ryder Cup returns to NYC metro as Europe eyes rare back-to-back triumph on American soil

The Ryder Cup will be played in the New York City metropolitan area for the first time since 1935, with Bethpage Black on Long Island set to host the biennial matches between Team USA and Team Europe this fall. The event is scheduled to tee off shortly after 7 a.m. ET on Friday, with NBC, USA Network and Peacock providing live coverage.

Bethpage’s selection marks a long-awaited return to the region after years of planning and adjustments. The decision to bring the matches to Long Island was announced in September 2013, when Bethpage Black—famed in golf lore for its demanding layout and challenging conditions—was named the host course. The Ryder Cup schedule has been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which postponed the 2020 edition and shifted the cadence of subsequent events. The Ryder Cup originally operated on odd-numbered years, but the delays pushed the rotation, prompting a return to the traditional pattern in recent seasons.

The three-day competition features 28 points up for grabs, with a team needing 14.5 points to win. On Friday and Saturday, four four-ball matches and four foursomes matches are played, alternating morning and afternoon sessions, followed by Sunday singles in which all 24 players compete in 12 matches. This format has defined the event for decades and emphasizes both depth and compatibility across partners and lineups.

Team USA will be captained by Keegan Bradley and includes Scottie Scheffler, J.J. Spaun, Xander Schauffele, Russell Henley, Harris English, Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Cameron Young, Ben Griffin, Patrick Cantlay and Sam Burns. Bradley had the opportunity to select himself for the week but ultimately did not.

Luke Donald will lead Team Europe, bringing back most of the winning squad from 2023. The roster features Rory McIlroy, Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, Tyrrell Hatton, Shane Lowry, Sepp Straka, Ludvig Aberg, Viktor Hovland, Matt Fitzpatrick, Jon Rahm and Rasmus Hojgaard, who takes Nicolai Hojgaard’s place in the lineup.

Europe has a chance to snap two long-standing trends: no team has won back-to-back Ryder Cups since Europe achieved a three-peat from 2010 to 2014, and the 2012 Medinah victory remains the last time the European side won on U.S. soil. The two teams have alternated eras of dominance since the competition expanded to include all of Europe in 1979, a shift that turned the matches into a genuine global showdown.

The Ryder Cup’s return to the New York area also carries symbolic significance, given the region’s storied golf history and the large, passionate crowds that typically fill Bethpage Black’s rolling fairways. As the teams prepare, interest is high across broadcasters and fans awaiting the weekend’s pivotal moments. NBC, USA Network and Peacock will stream the event, continuing a multimedia approach that has become central to modern golf coverage.

As the hosts and visitors plot their paths through Bethpage, the golf world will watch for partnerships, form, and the strategic decisions that define a Ryder Cup week. The competition’s unique format rewards not only individual excellence but also teamwork, atmosphere, and the ability to rise to pressure in the week’s toughest moments. With a return to the New York metro circuit, this edition promises a storied chapter in the history of the event, and a test of which team will claim golf’s most prestigious biennial prize.
