Sam Kerr opens up about motherhood and future for Jagger amid Chelsea comeback

Sam Kerr has given a rare interview about motherhood, saying she is still wrapping her head around becoming a mother and revealing what she hopes baby son Jagger will pursue when he grows up. The Chelsea and Matildas captain welcomed their first child with fiancée Kristie Mewis in May and has just returned to the pitch after a 20-month absence caused by an ACL rupture during a training camp in Morocco.

Kerr spoke to the We Are Chelsea podcast, saying motherhood remains something she’s still processing. She recalled moments with Jagger that have underscored the surreal nature of parenthood, noting that the reality of having a child is something she and Mewis are still wrapping their heads around as they navigate life with their son. She added that the connection feels instant and irreplaceable, even as the everyday reality of parenting proves challenging at times.

Kerr described the best part of being a mum as the moment she returns home and sees Jagger’s excitement to greet her. She compared the feeling to having a dog, but multiplied: it’s 100 times more intense, more joyful, and also more demanding. The striker said the experience is rewarding in ways nothing else could be, while acknowledging the practical realities of parenting – the days aren’t simple, and moments of quiet are rare.

Her Chelsea teammate Erin Cuthbert said she has been amazed by Kerr’s transformation since embracing motherhood. Cuthbert noted Kerr now seems more certain in handling babies, a change that has impressed those who know her well and observed her adapt to life as a parent while continuing to perform at the highest level.

When asked whether Jagger would follow his parents into professional sport, Kerr indicated she isn’t pushing for a sports career for him. Instead, she joked about alternate paths, saying she’d prefer that he pursue a profession that could provide financial security, such as becoming a scientist or a surgeon, and she stressed that she and Mewis would support whichever path he chooses.

The couple are expected to marry later this year, adding another milestone to Kerr’s return to peak form. Last week she marked a personal milestone for Chelsea, scoring her 100th goal for the English club in what was her first match back after the lengthy layoff. Kerr described the milestone as a testament to hard work, dedication, and sacrifice, and said she would carry the memory with her for the rest of her life. She emphasized that scoring goals remains central to her identity as a player, and that the journey back to the field has been both demanding and deeply rewarding.
