Sam Kerr sidelined again as Ellie Carpenter shines on Chelsea debut

Sam Kerr will have to wait longer to make her return after a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament as she remained an unused substitute for Chelsea in the Women’s Super League opener at Stamford Bridge.

Ellie Carpenter, making her debut for Chelsea after joining from Lyon in the close season, produced a livewire performance and set up the Blues’ opening goal in a 2-1 home victory over Manchester City, one of Chelsea’s main title rivals. Carpenter was widely regarded as the match’s outstanding player.

Kerr has not played since December 2023, when she suffered an ACL rupture, and has spent the past 20 months in rehabilitation and recovery. The forward was included among the substitutes for the season opener but was not introduced as Chelsea began their bid for a seventh consecutive English title.

Chelsea’s start to the season was not entirely convincing, with the match falling short of a commanding display against a principal challenger. Still, Carpenter’s direct contribution and energetic defending provided the decisive spark for the hosts and helped secure three points in a fixture that will be viewed as an early barometer for the title race.

Carpenter’s move from Lyon was one of several changes to Chelsea’s squad over the close season as the club seeks to maintain domestic dominance. Her performance on debut underlined the immediate impact the club’s recruitment team hoped to achieve.

Kerr’s prolonged absence has been one of the most closely watched narratives in women’s football since her injury, and her presence on the bench suggested she is progressing through the final stages of recovery. Chelsea manager selection choices and player fitness will determine when the striker returns to competitive action.

Chelsea will now shift focus to the next round of fixtures as they look to build momentum early in the campaign. Manchester City, meanwhile, will review the defeat as they regroup for upcoming domestic and European commitments.
