Scheffler says bond with Trump could help USA at Ryder Cup after Kirk shooting
World No. 1 Scheffler says the president’s involvement and support could galvanize Team USA as the Ryder Cup opens in New York following Charlie Kirk’s death

Scottie Scheffler says he has a close bond with Donald Trump, and Team USA is eager to have the president at the Ryder Cup in New York. The 45th Ryder Cup, a Showpiece between the United States and Europe, is set for the opening day in New York, coming about two weeks after Charlie Kirk, a political ally of Trump, was shot dead in Utah.
Speaking ahead of the event, Scheffler said Trump regularly reaches out after wins, and that the president loves golf and supporting players. He added that Trump treats everyone with respect, from the person serving lunch to the caddie on the golf course and the president of the club. The world No. 1 said he does not expect the president to address the team on the course, but that if things go well, they might hear from him during the week. When asked what Trump would say, Scheffler said the president typically tells players they did a great job.
Trump is scheduled to attend on Friday, which will bring additional security and fanfare surrounding his appearance. Daily Mail Sport reported that the president is expected to arrive late morning, not in time for the first tee shots at 7:10 a.m. ET.
Scheffler described the presidential support as extremely important for Team USA, especially given the turmoil in the country in recent weeks. He said the team is proud to represent the United States on home soil in New York and that the flag matters to them as Americans. “We’re excited to be on home soil with the home crowd and we’re ready to get this tournament started,” he added.
Trump has increasingly attended major sports events since returning to the White House, including appearances at tennis and baseball games. His Ryder Cup presence in New York will be watched as a signal of how politics intersects with sport as the event unfolds.
