Scotland 2-0 Belarus as Denmark stun Greece — Scots in strong World Cup qualifying position

Scotland beat Belarus 2-0 in a World Cup qualifying fixture played in Hungary on Monday as Denmark's 3-0 win in Greece left the Scots well placed at the top of Group A after two matchdays.

Scotland have taken four points from their opening two games, both played away from home, and have kept two clean sheets to start the campaign. The results have created a favourable early position in the section ahead of a run of home fixtures at Hampden Park.

Che Adams opened the scoring just before half-time and an eventual Belarus own goal ensured the 2-0 victory in a match held behind closed doors. The game, described by team staff as awkward because of the atmosphere, nevertheless produced the desired result for Steve Clarke’s side.

Ben Doak, introduced as a substitute, was described by onlookers as the standout performer as Scotland sought to manage the game. The result followed a 1-1 draw away to Denmark in Copenhagen on the opening matchday, meaning Scotland sit on four points while Denmark, with a win and a draw, also remain among the early leaders.

Denmark’s 3-0 victory in Greece reshaped the section as well; the result in Athens left the Danish side with momentum and set up a straightforward arithmetic scenario for Scotland. If Scotland win all three of their remaining home matches at Hampden they would move to at least 13 points. If Denmark were to lose at Hampden but win their other three fixtures, they would also finish on 13 points, in which case goal difference would decide the section winner.

Scotland’s next fixtures are a home double-header next month against Greece and Belarus. Those games present the best opportunity for the team to consolidate their position and move closer to direct qualification for next summer’s World Cup in North America.

Adams’ goal was noted as the first competitive goal by a Scotland striker in almost two years, providing a timely scoring boost. Clarke’s team will aim to build on two clean sheets and the four-point start when they return to Hampden, while supporters and officials monitor the remaining fixtures across the group for a clearer picture of who will top the section.

The early phase of qualifying has offered Scotland a stronger-than-expected platform after the draw, which had initially suggested the team might contest a play-off place behind seeded Denmark. With several home matches to come, Scotland have real opportunity to aim for outright qualification, but the group remains open with multiple fixtures still to play.
