Scotland hold Denmark to 0-0 draw in Copenhagen to open World Cup qualifying
Steve Clarke hails defensive display as Scotland pick up an encouraging point; attention now turns to Belarus in Hungary

Scotland opened their World Cup qualifying campaign with a 0-0 draw against Denmark at Copenhagen's Parken Stadium on Friday, a result manager Steve Clarke described as the product of an "outstanding" defensive performance and a positive start to a compressed qualifying schedule.
The visitors frustrated the group favourites throughout a disciplined display that yielded several counter-attacking opportunities. Clarke singled out the backline for praise after John Souttar and Grant Hanley marshalled Scotland’s defence, while the midfield and forwards created chances that ultimately went unconverted.
Ryan Christie and John McGinn both missed presentable openings in the first half, and Scott McTominay was denied by Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel after the interval. Lyndon Dykes squandered what was described as a golden opportunity to break the deadlock, and Denmark threatened from distance on a couple of occasions but could not find a way through Scotland’s organised rearguard.
Clarke said the result set the right tone for a truncated section of qualifying that will see Scotland face a tough sequence of fixtures over the next 75 days. "It’s a good start for us," the manager said, noting the team’s discipline and the contributions of substitutes as part of a collective effort.

Ben Gannon Doak, who recently completed a move from Liverpool to Bournemouth, was introduced late, entering the match in the 83rd minute. The 19-year-old’s appearance will be watched with interest as Scotland seek greater attacking fluency in the tightly scheduled campaign.
The point leaves Scotland in a favourable position to press on, but it does not guarantee qualification. Scotland have not played at a World Cup since 1998, and a first win in Copenhagen for more than half a century remains elusive. The immediate focus is on Monday’s fixture against Belarus, which will be played behind closed doors in neutral Hungary; Belarus were beaten 5-1 in Greece in their opening game of the section.
Clarke urged caution while acknowledging the value of avoiding defeat against the seeded team in the group. "We certainly created enough going forward as well, which was good to see," he said. "We defended well. John Souttar and Grant Hanley at the back were outstanding, but you could go through the whole team."
The draw will be read as a solid foundation, particularly given the quality of Scotland’s opposition and the condensed nature of the qualifying window. Players and fans alike acknowledged the significance of earning a result at Parken, and attention now turns to converting opportunities into wins as the campaign progresses.
