Sean McVay says he tore plantar fascia in Week 2 win over Titans

Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay said Tuesday that he tore his plantar fascia during the team's 33-19 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, though he will not be listed on the club's injury report this week.

McVay, 39, disclosed the injury on the team-produced "Coach McVay Show," saying an MRI confirmed the diagnosis. "Foot's good," he said. "I did tear my plantar fascia, so yeah. Well, that's a good thing, because I guess it allows you to heal a little faster. But I was being dramatic, limping around towards the end of the game, but the MRI confirmed I did that. Good news is I'm not playing. I'm just on the sidelines watching, so if I have a little cool limp to add some swag, then you'll know why."

McVay did not provide a specific description of how the injury occurred, but he appeared to tweak his foot while calling a timeout during the game. It was not clear immediately whether he will use a walking boot as the injury heals. The Rams are 2-0 and will visit the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday in what is being billed as a playoff rematch.

The plantar fascia is the thick band of tissue that runs along the sole of the foot and supports the arch. Tears or strains to that structure can cause significant pain and tenderness, though recovery times vary by severity and treatment. McVay noted he was not an active participant on the field, emphasizing his role on the sideline rather than as a player.

Coaches sustaining sideline injuries is uncommon but not unprecedented in the NFL. In 2011, New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin suffered a leg injury after a collision with running back D.J. Ware during a game against the New York Jets. Coughlin briefly left the sideline for treatment, returned and later joked with reporters about his condition after the Giants went on to win 29-14.

The Rams enter their meeting with the Eagles with a 2-0 record, seeking to maintain momentum early in the season. McVay, in his ninth season as head coach, will continue to lead the team from the sideline while the club monitors his recovery and finalizes any decisions about supportive devices or further treatment. The team did not provide an updated timetable for his return to full mobility.
