SEC announcer miscalls field-goal as Mississippi State falls to Tennessee in overtime

An SEC broadcast error overshadowed a high-scoring game between Mississippi State and Tennessee on Saturday, as a 42-yard field-goal attempt by Bulldogs kicker Kyle Ferrie went wide right in the fourth quarter. On the SEC network feed, announcer Dave Neal initially declared the kick good and praised Ferrie’s leg before realizing the miss and correcting the call on air.

Ferrie had not missed a field goal this season prior to that attempt and had connected on a 51-yard field goal earlier in the game. The miscue occurred with Mississippi State trailing 20-17 midway through the fourth, and replays showed the ball veering wide as Neal continued to praise Ferrie's leg before pausing to say, "Oh, no good, excuse me."

Mississippi State ultimately lost in overtime, as Tennessee escaped with a 41-34 victory. Aguilar threw for 335 yards and one touchdown but was intercepted twice on 24 completions of 40 attempts.

Aguilar's 200-yard passing streak remains active: he has thrown for at least 200 yards in all 29 of his NCAA starts, the longest active streak in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The transfer from Appalachian State enjoyed a productive afternoon against Mississippi State.

After the game, Tennessee coach Josh Heupel praised Aguilar for maintaining the same demeanor on the sideline regardless of the play, saying, "Joey, what I love about him is that whether it is good play, bad play, good series, bad series, he has the same demeanor coming off the sideline he goes and approaches the next play the same way."

Joey Aguilar throws in the first half.
