Sevilla taunts Chelsea as Old Trafford misery endures after 2-1 defeat

Chelsea's winless run at Old Trafford extended on Saturday as they were beaten 2-1 by Manchester United, a result that deepened the Blues' troubling record at the venue and drew a pointed response from Sevilla on social media. Robert Sanchez was dismissed after five minutes for a professional foul, forcing Enzo Maresca to unleash a rapid double substitution and reshuffle his side. Chelsea also saw talisman Cole Palmer leave the field with an injury early in the match.

Bruno Fernandes put United ahead, and Casemiro doubled the advantage just before half-time after Sanchez's red card, leaving Chelsea to chase the game with 10 men. The Blues pulled a goal back through Trevoh Chalobah, but United held firm as Casemiro collected a second yellow card in first-half stoppage time. The contest finished 2-1 to United despite Chelsea's late endeavour.

Sevilla joined the chorus of taunts, posting a reminder of Chelsea's poor record at Old Trafford and their last away win there. The Spanish club wrote: Last away win at Old Trafford: Sevilla 2018, Chelsea 2013, and added We don't play in the Premier League. Sevilla had eliminated United in a 2018 Champions League last-16 meeting, underscoring a contrast between Sevilla's recent success at the ground and Chelsea's drought.

Chelsea's last victory at Old Trafford came in May 2013, during Sir Alex Ferguson's final season, when Juan Mata scored an 87th-minute winner under manager Rafael Benitez. Since that breakthrough, Chelsea have drawn seven and lost six in the Premier League at Old Trafford, a record that underlines the scale of the challenge they face when visiting the ground. Their six Premier League wins at Old Trafford all came in the Ferguson era, and it has been 15 years since Chelsea scored more than once in a match there.

The Blues currently hold the third-longest winless run at Old Trafford among Premier League clubs in the top flight, with only Brentford and Leeds United having longer waits for a win at the venue. The latest setback at United follows a period in which the Red Devils have struggled to sustain consistent league form since Ferguson's retirement.

In the wider context, the result keeps Chelsea in a difficult stretch under Maresca, as United seek momentum amid a season that has shown ups and downs rather than a clear, steady surge. While Sevilla’s light-hearted jibe captured a moment of levity, the on-field implications for Chelsea are more telling: they remain widely noted for their lingering challenge in producing consistent results away from home against United, a trend that has endured for more than a decade.
