Sister of Timberwolves forward Naz Reid fatally shot in New Jersey; boyfriend charged, prosecutors say
Ocean County prosecutors say 28-year-old Toraya Reid was found with multiple gunshot wounds; suspect Shaquille Green charged with murder and unlawful possession of a firearm

Toraya Reid, the 28-year-old sister of Minnesota Timberwolves forward Naz Reid, was shot and killed early Saturday in Jackson Township, New Jersey, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office said.
Police responding around 11 a.m. found Toraya Reid with multiple gunshot wounds near an exit of an apartment building, prosecutors said. Authorities quickly took 29-year-old Shaquille Green, who prosecutors say was dating Toraya Reid, into custody at the scene. Green has been charged with murder and unlawful possession of a firearm and is being held in the Ocean County Jail awaiting a detention hearing.
It was not immediately clear whether Toraya Reid and Green shared an apartment; prosecutors said both were living in Jackson Township. Law enforcement officials provided few additional details about the circumstances leading up to the shooting, and the prosecutor’s office did not immediately release a timeline beyond the time and location of the discovery.
Naz Reid, 26, a forward for the Minnesota Timberwolves who signed a reported $125 million contract extension in June, has publicly described his older sister as a central figure in his upbringing. In a 2023 interview with Mpls. St. Paul Magazine, Naz Reid said Toraya treated her younger siblings “like she’s our parent.”
Their youngest sister, Jakahya, posted on social media asking for privacy as the family grieved and described struggling to accept the death. In one post shared publicly, Jakahya wrote that the family could not imagine facing such a loss and pleaded for respect while she processed the news.
Naz Reid and his sisters grew up in the Asbury Park area of New Jersey and attended Roselle Catholic High School, about 40 miles from their childhood home. While Naz excelled in basketball, family accounts say Toraya preferred softball and their father coached football.
The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office said investigators will present evidence at a detention hearing for Green, where a judge will consider whether he should remain held without bail pending trial. Prosecutors did not release additional details about the weapon or possible motive.
Calls to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and to a listed contact for Green were not immediately returned on Saturday. The Timberwolves organization did not immediately issue a statement. Representatives for Naz Reid did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The shooting comes as Naz Reid is in the spotlight for his on-court production and recent contract; his family ties and the local New Jersey community where he and his siblings were raised have been frequently noted in profiles of his rise in the NBA. The investigation in Jackson Township remains active, and prosecutors asked anyone with information to contact local law enforcement.
