Sister of Timberwolves’ Naz Reid fatally shot in New Jersey, suspect charged

Toraya Reid, the sister of Minnesota Timberwolves center Naz Reid, was shot and killed Saturday at an apartment complex in Jackson Township, New Jersey, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Jackson Township police officers responded to a call about shots fired at the complex at about 11 a.m. ET. Responding officers found a deceased woman, later identified by prosecutors as Toraya Reid, with multiple gunshot wounds, the prosecutor’s office said.

Authorities said 29-year-old Shaquille Green of Jackson Township was seen running on a road near the apartment complex and was taken into custody without incident. Green, who investigators determined had been dating Toraya Reid, was later charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon. He was booked at the Ocean County Jail, the prosecutor’s office said.

Naz Reid, a center entering his seventh NBA season with the Minnesota Timberwolves, was born in Asbury Park, New Jersey, a few miles from where the shooting occurred. He attended high school in Roselle and played college basketball at LSU.

On social media, Reid posted two childhood photos of himself with his sister on his Instagram Stories. In a 2023 interview with Mpls.St.Paul Magazine, he described Toraya as his older sister and called her "super protective," saying, "She treats us like she’s our parent." The prosecutor’s office provided the identification of the victim.

Officials released the charges against Green but did not provide further details about the circumstances leading to the shooting in the initial statement. The investigation remains under the authority of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, which typically handles charging decisions and would present the case to a grand jury or pursue indictment procedures under New Jersey law.

Local scene

No additional public comment from the Minnesota Timberwolves or the NBA was included in the prosecutor’s release. Further information is expected as the inquiry and any subsequent legal proceedings develop.
