St. Olaf College football player Matthew Lee fatally shot; 19-year-old suspect arrested

Matthew Lee, a 19-year-old linebacker for St. Olaf College, was shot to death Friday morning in South St. Paul, Minnesota, and police arrested a 19-year-old suspect, authorities said.

South St. Paul officers responded to a residence where two men had sustained gunshot injuries; Lee was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other victim was wounded, according to multiple reports. Officers located and apprehended a suspect nearby roughly two hours after arriving at the scene. No charges had been filed and the suspect had not been identified publicly as of Tuesday, and police said the circumstances surrounding the shooting remained under investigation.

St. Olaf head coach James Kilian described Lee as a "big teddy bear" and said the program was grieving. Kilian told KTSP that Lee, who had been recovering from a knee injury, was "just a great kid" with "a great, caring personality" who connected well with teammates. In remarks carried by KMSP, Kilian said Lee had overcome adversity in high school and been a leader, a strong student and a dual-sport athlete in his hometown of South St. Paul.

Teammates have filled Lee's locker with flowers and took part in a memorial service at the college. A GoFundMe page set up to benefit Lee's mother, Jody Clark, described him as a devoted son and older brother whose "presence lit up every room," and called on supporters to honor his memory by carrying forward "the love, strength, and hope he shared during his time with us."

St. Olaf College, a Division III institution in Minnesota, is best known for its century-old football rivalry with nearby Carleton College. Lee was listed as part of the Oles' roster and had been working his way back from the knee injury at the time of the shooting, Kilian said.

Police have not released details about a motive or the events leading up to the shooting. Investigators continue to process the scene and gather evidence, and authorities urged anyone with information to contact the South St. Paul police department. The county medical examiner will release further information about the victim after an autopsy and notifications to next of kin.

The death has reverberated through the campus community and among high school acquaintances in South St. Paul, where Lee had been described by coaches and peers as a leader both on and off the field. The college and athletic department issued statements expressing condolences and offering support to students, staff and family as the investigation proceeds.
