Team USA Ryder Cup T‑shirt Sparks Outrage After Silhouette Resembles Rory McIlroy

Team USA’s official Ryder Cup merchandise drew sharp criticism after fans and at least one Tour insider said the silhouette on a newly released Ralph Lauren T‑shirt appears to depict Rory McIlroy, a leading member of Team Europe.

The Ralph Lauren 2025 Ryder Cup Graphic T‑Shirt in Refined Navy, priced at $65 on the Ryder Cup shop, features a prominent golfer graphic that social media users and some players said bears a striking resemblance to McIlroy’s signature high‑finish follow‑through. A screenshot of the product listing circulated widely on Monday night, prompting debate among fans and in the Tour locker room.

An unnamed source quoted by British media said, “That’s definitely Rory, nobody swings like him.” Organizers and Ralph Lauren did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the design or whether the silhouette was modeled on a specific player.

Rory McIlroy, 36, is preparing for his eighth consecutive Ryder Cup appearance for Team Europe. He arrives at the event in strong form after recording a victory at the Irish Open, his fourth title of the season. McIlroy closed the Irish Open with a long putt on the par‑five 18th to force a playoff and then beat Sweden’s Joakim Lagergren to claim the title. After the win he said that the result had “exceeded my expectations” and called 2025 one of the best years of his career.

Ralph Lauren is the official kit supplier for Team USA and will outfit players during the Ryder Cup, which begins Sept. 26. The tournament will see Team USA, captained by Keegan Bradley, face a European side that reclaimed the Cup in 2023. The disputed T‑shirt is among a range of items that have been released in advance of the match.

The merchandise debate underscores the heightened attention on visuals and branding in the run‑up to the biennial event, where commercial partners and national teams often unveil apparel intended for both fans and players. Social media users noted the perceived likeness to McIlroy’s swing, fueling broader conversation online about whether the graphic was an oversight.

Organizers have not issued an official statement addressing the specific claims about the silhouette. With match play set to begin later this month, the focus among players and team officials is expected to remain on preparation and selection of lineups rather than apparel controversies.

McIlroy’s recent victory and season form reinforce his status as a key figure for Europe, while Team USA will seek to reclaim the trophy on home soil. The Ryder Cup’s opening sessions and team announcements will follow in the days leading up to the first matches on Sept. 26.
