The Houston Texans released safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson on Tuesday after three games with the club, part of roster changes as the team searches for answers in an 0-3 start to the season. The move came amid reports of friction behind the scenes, including Gardner-Johnson's concerns about his role and a desire to blitz more and to be traded.

Gardner-Johnson, 27, was acquired in a March 2025 trade with Philadelphia that sent the Super Bowl champion to Houston. In three starts this season, he registered 15 total tackles. The decision comes as Houston reshapes its secondary while safety Jimmie Ward was removed from the commissioner’s exempt list on Monday, a move that appears to have factored into personnel decisions.

Reports described friction behind the scenes, with Gardner-Johnson reportedly complaining about his role, seeking more blitz opportunities and signaling a desire to be traded.

Gardner-Johnson had built a strong reputation before arriving in Houston. The former fourth-round pick signed a three-year, $27 million deal with Philadelphia in March 2024 and delivered one of the best seasons of his career in 2024, tying a career high with six interceptions across 16 games for the Eagles. After the trade, he publicly criticized Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio on social media, writing that he felt used as a “test dummy” for others’ schemes and engaging in a public exchange with Baker Mayfield after a recent on-field incident.

The Texans are trying to salvage an 0-3 start and continue a recent pattern of postseason appearances in two of the past three seasons. The decision to part ways with Gardner-Johnson reflects a broader push to recalibrate a defense that has struggled to find consistency early in the year.

As Houston moves forward, the team will rely on remaining veterans and younger players to stabilize the back end and improve the overall defensive performance. The move underscores how quickly roster dynamics can shift in the early weeks of the season as teams weigh production, fit, and locker-room dynamics in real time.
