Thousands Expected to Line South Wales for Geraint Thomas’s Final Race
2018 Tour de France champion to retire after Tour of Britain concludes in Cardiff

Thousands of cycling fans are expected to line streets across south Wales on Sunday as Geraint Thomas brings his professional career to a close with the final stage of the Tour of Britain in Cardiff.
The 122.2km final stage will start at the Newport velodrome that bears Thomas’s name and will pass his childhood club, Maindy Flyers, before finishing in his hometown. Thomas, 39, announced he will retire at the end of the season and said he was fortunate the Tour of Britain falls at the end of the calendar, allowing him to finish on home roads.
"The last stage goes within 100 metres of my mum and dad's house, past the pub where I had my first pint," Thomas said. "I'm just lucky the Tour of Britain comes at the end of the season so I can finish my career on home roads. It will be an amazing way to finish."
Organisers and local authorities have anticipated large crowds along the route, reflecting Thomas’s status as one of Britain’s most successful cyclists. He is a former Tour de France champion and an Olympic gold medallist, with a career that has included victories and high-profile performances on both road and track.
Thomas is riding this year’s Tour of Britain but sits well down the overall standings. He was 86th after Saturday’s fifth stage and trailed the race leader, Romain Grégoire, by more than 16 minutes. Saturday’s climbing stage between Pontypool and The Tumble was described by riders and observers as an emotional day, with large, vocal crowds on the climbs.
Local clubs and community groups around Newport and Cardiff have prepared to welcome fans, with extra stewards and road closures planned for the finish. The route’s passage near Maindy Flyers and through familiar neighbourhoods is expected to draw supporters who followed Thomas from his early years in the sport.
Thomas’s final competitive appearance will conclude a career that spanned track and road disciplines and earned him multiple national and international titles. The Tour of Britain’s closing day offers a hometown finale, bringing a high-profile British season to an end in front of thousands of fans on Welsh roads.
Race organisers confirmed the schedule for Sunday’s final stage and asked spectators to observe stewarding and safety guidance. Media coverage and team support vehicles are expected in Cardiff as organisers and fans prepare to mark Thomas’s last professional race.
