Tom Brady to Return to the Field for Fanatics Flag Football Classic in Saudi Arabia

Tom Brady will come out of retirement to play competitive football in the Fanatics Flag Football Classic on March 21, 2026, in Saudi Arabia, ESPN reporter Adam Schefter said Monday.

According to Schefter, Brady will join an event that features current NFL stars including Saquon Barkley, Christian McCaffrey, CeeDee Lamb, Maxx Crosby, Sauce Gardner and Myles Garrett. Former teammate Rob Gronkowski also is set to compete, and three high-profile coaches — Pete Carroll, Sean Payton and Kyle Shanahan — are to lead the tournament teams. The event, promoted by sports merchandise company Fanatics, is billed as a competitive flag football tournament that will bring retired and active players together on an international stage.

The Fanatics Classic marks Brady's first return to competitive play since he announced his retirement in February 2023. Brady, a seven-time Super Bowl champion whose NFL career spanned more than two decades, retired after the 2022 season following an NFC wild-card exit. The event is sponsored by Fanatics, the company run by businessman Michael Rubin, a longtime friend of Brady.

Organizers have cast the matchup as part exhibition, part competition, reflecting growing interest in flag football as a spectator product and the sport's global promotion. The appearance by Brady and other marquee names is expected to draw significant attention as leagues and promoters seek new international markets and alternative formats of the traditional game.

Details about rosters, broadcasting arrangements and exact format for the tournament were not immediately available. Schefter's report did not specify whether the games will follow standard flag-football rules used in amateur leagues or a modified set tailored for televised competition. Fanatics and representatives for Brady and Gronkowski did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Brady's participation continues a recent trend of retired NFL stars taking part in non-NFL events and exhibitions that blend entertainment and sport. The March event will be his first competitive on-field appearance since stepping away from the NFL, offering fans a chance to see him perform in a different format and setting.

The announcement arrives amid a tense national climate over public events and safety after the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk while he was speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem earlier this month. The killing prompted a nationwide law-enforcement manhunt and the identification this week by Utah officials of a suspect, whom authorities say was turned in after being confronted by his father. The shooting has sparked debate across political and cultural lines about security at public gatherings and broader discussions about gun policy.

Oakland comedian and television producer W. Kamau Bell published a Substack essay this week addressing Kirk's death and calling for "common-sense gun reform," writing that he would not publicly mourn Kirk and arguing that the country needs tighter restrictions on access to certain firearms. Bell, a Peabody and Emmy Award-winning producer and former host of CNN's United Shades of America, said the episode underscored the urgency of legislative action on guns. His essay is one of several public reactions that have intertwined questions of safety, politics and the presence of high-profile figures at live events.

Organizers of the Fanatics Flag Football Classic will face logistical and security planning as they prepare to host high-profile athletes and coaches abroad. The tournament also raises broader questions about how the NFL, its past stars and independent promoters are expanding football's footprint through alternative formats.

More details on rosters, ticketing and broadcast plans are expected as promoters finalize preparations for the March event. ESPN and other outlets said they will provide updates as additional information becomes available.
