Travis Kelce drop leads Eagles to 20-17 win over Chiefs at Arrowhead

A bobbled pass intended for Travis Kelce on a second-and-goal from the 6-yard line swung momentum and doomed the Kansas City Chiefs, allowing the Philadelphia Eagles to escape Arrowhead Stadium with a 20-17 victory Sunday.

Instead of Kansas City taking a 17-13 lead late in the third quarter, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce mishandled a throw from Patrick Mahomes and Andrew Mukuba intercepted the pass. Mukuba returned the ball to the Eagles' 41, and Philadelphia drove 59 yards on 10 plays to take a lead it would not relinquish.

The loss dropped the Chiefs to 0-2 to open the season while the Eagles improved to 2-0. Kansas City’s offense, already under scrutiny after a sluggish Week 1 performance, again struggled to sustain drives. Kelce finished with a team-high 61 receiving yards. Mahomes completed multiple attempts but was unable to produce a late comeback, marking his third straight loss if last season’s Super Bowl is counted — the first such streak of his NFL career.

Saquon Barkley led Philadelphia’s ground game with 88 rushing yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Jalen Hurts was limited in the air to 101 passing yards but added a rushing touchdown that contributed to the Eagles’ winning margin.

Taylor Swift, Kelce’s fiancée, attended the game and made a quiet entrance to Arrowhead Stadium. Her presence drew media attention before the decisive sequence in the third quarter, but the outcome turned on the turnover and the Eagles’ ensuing scoring drive.

Kansas City had an opportunity to seize control moments after halftime. Instead, the miscue on second-and-goal shifted field position dramatically and allowed the Eagles to flip momentum. Philadelphia capitalized with a methodical drive that chewed time and produced the touchdown that put them ahead.

The Chiefs’ offense had difficulty converting in key situations throughout the game, bringing more scrutiny to play-calling and execution early in the season. Mahomes and Kelce, who have frequently connected on late-game and red-zone plays over multiple seasons, were unable to replicate those finishes against a Philadelphia defense that forced the pivotal turnover.

Philadelphia’s defense delivered timely plays beyond the interception, limiting explosive gains and applying pressure on Kansas City’s passing attack. The Eagles’ ability to run the ball with Barkley and to generate rushing yards from Hurts helped control the clock in the game’s decisive stages.

Following the loss, Kansas City faces questions about its offensive efficiency and red-zone execution as it prepares for upcoming opponents. Philadelphia, meanwhile, will look to build on its early-season form with consecutive wins and a road victory in a hostile environment.

The teams will return to their regular-season schedules next week with the Chiefs seeking their first win and the Eagles aiming to remain unbeaten.
