Travis Kelce slams helmet, drops key pass in Chiefs' 20-17 loss to Eagles

Travis Kelce's visible frustration on Sunday culminated in a helmet slam and a fourth-quarter drop that was intercepted, helping the Philadelphia Eagles to a 20-17 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium on Sept. 14, 2025.

The sequence shifted momentum late in the game. Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw to Kelce as the tight end cut across the field; Kelce failed to secure the pass and it bounced into the hands of Eagles safety Andrew Mukuba. Philadelphia converted the turnover into a 10-play, 59-yard drive that ended with a touchdown, giving the Eagles a decisive lead.

The helmet-slam incident occurred earlier in the second quarter after Mahomes scored on a rushing touchdown; a broadcast clip showed Kelce telling teammates he was "sick of this s---" and then slamming his helmet to the turf. The tight end finished the game with four catches for 61 yards, the team high.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid described Kelce's sideline emotion as part of his effort to fire up teammates. "He's trying to get guys fired up and going. I mean, that's him. He's that way every week if you keep an eye on him. He's all in, all the time. That's the way he was today," Reid said.

Mahomes acknowledged the timing of his throw on the play that led to the interception. "We got the defense that we wanted. We expect them to play that zero-zero with the hole player — with the safety," Mahomes said. "I think I threw it just a tad too early, just trying to put it on his body low before that hole player got there and I think if I can put it more on his body and not so far out in front of him then he can catch it, take the hit and get in the end zone."

The loss dropped Kansas City to 0-2 to open the season, the first time the Chiefs have started 0-2 in the Mahomes era. Mahomes said the team had played two strong opponents and made mistakes at critical moments. "We played two good football teams and made mistakes in big moments — stuff that we're not used to doing," he said. "But I think we're coming together as a team. When you deal with adversity it's about how you deal with it and obviously, this isn't how we wanted to start. But how are we going to respond? I'm excited for the next few weeks to see who wants to be challenged and how we can get back and really get after it."

The game marked a regular-season rematch of Super Bowl LIX participants, with Philadelphia relying on a timely defensive play to swing the outcome. Mukuba's interception and the subsequent touchdown drive proved decisive in a contested game that saw both teams trade scoring opportunities.

Kelce heads off the field after the game

Kansas City will look to regroup as it prepares for its next matchup; the Chiefs' early-season struggles will be a storyline to monitor as the team aims to return to the form that produced sustained success in recent years.
