Trent Alexander-Arnold Withdrawn After Three Minutes in Real Madrid Champions League Debut

Trent Alexander-Arnold was forced off with an apparent hamstring injury just three minutes into his Champions League debut for Real Madrid on Tuesday, deepening a challenging start to life in the Spanish capital.

The 26-year-old, signed from Liverpool in the summer, appeared to pull up while contesting play and went down clutching his right hamstring. Medical staff attended on the pitch and teammates gathered around while Alexander-Arnold received treatment before being substituted. Real Madrid did not immediately provide an update on the severity of the injury.

Alexander-Arnold’s early exit comes after a summer transfer that drew significant attention. Real Madrid paid Liverpool a reported £10 million fee to secure the defender’s services and ensure his availability for the Club World Cup. The move followed a high-profile career at his boyhood club and marked a major midfield-to-defence transition for Los Blancos.

Since arriving, the England international has endured an uneven period. He featured in Real’s pre-season and Club World Cup preparations and started in matches during a U.S. tournament in which Madrid were eliminated in the semi-finals by Paris Saint-Germain. Manager Xabi Alonso has rotated the right-back position, alternating between the 26-year-old and veteran Dani Carvajal.

Alonso has framed the situation as internal competition rather than a clear hierarchy. "Fortunately, we have healthy competition within the team, and they're challenged internally because there are team-mates who are ready," he said this week. "It also happens in other positions, like centre back or winger. Whoever deserves it will play; it's going to be very repetitive all year."

Carvajal, 33, has been the preferred option at right-back early in Alonso’s tenure, bringing experience and defensive solidity. Alexander-Arnold offers a more attack-minded profile from the right flank, but Alonso has so far leaned toward a defensive-first approach in selection decisions amid a squad abundant in attacking talent.

Alexander-Arnold had been left out of Real’s La Liga starting XI for the weekend fixture against Real Sociedad, a match Madrid won 2-1 in San Sebastián. The result left Real Madrid top of La Liga after four matches, and the club’s season objectives remain intact despite the selection debate over the right-back spot.

The injury will add uncertainty to Alexander-Arnold’s availability as the season progresses and could influence Alonso’s rotation plans. Real Madrid face domestic and European fixtures in the coming weeks; the club is expected to monitor the defender closely and issue a formal medical update when one is available.

Alexander-Arnold’s move from Liverpool was among the summer’s most talked-about transfers, and his fitness and form will be watched carefully by supporters and national team selectors as he seeks to establish himself under Alonso and adapt to the demands of Spanish football.
