Twelve athletes compete in truck-pulling event in Misrata as organisers plan training club

Twelve athletes took part in a truck-pulling competition in the Libyan city of Misrata on Sept. 15, marking the second edition of the event, organisers said.

Competitors tested strength and endurance by pulling a heavy truck over a set course in a contest organisers described as part exhibition and part effort to promote strength sports locally. The event offered a prize fund; the organisers did not disclose the total sum.

Organisers said they plan to open a dedicated training club to prepare athletes who wish to take up truck-pulling and other strength disciplines. The club, they said, is intended to provide coaching and facilities aimed at developing stronger local participation in strength sports.

The Misrata contest follows a pattern seen in other countries where strongman-style events, including truck pulls, are used to showcase athletes' raw strength and to broaden community interest in weightlifting and functional fitness. Truck-pulling competitions typically measure competitors on how far or how quickly they can move a heavy vehicle over a marked distance, testing grip, leg drive and overall conditioning.

Coverage of the Misrata event included footage of athletes preparing and competing and highlighted the organisers' intent to build a local training programme. Event organisers invited those interested in joining the proposed club to contact them through community channels established during the contest.

Local sports events in Libya have resumed with varying scale and frequency since 2011, and organisers of niche competitions say small, community-driven contests can help identify and nurture athletic talent. The Misrata truck-pull organisers framed the contest as part of that grassroots movement and as an opportunity to attract participants to formal training.

No governing body for the event was named, and organisers did not provide details on eligibility rules, measurement standards or plans for future competitions beyond the training club announcement. Officials or athletes did not immediately provide further comment to media covering the event.
