Tyrrell Hatton recounts night of heavy drinking, waking in vomit after clinching Ryder Cup spot

Tyrrell Hatton on Wednesday described a prolonged night of drinking with teammate Jon Rahm after learning he had secured an automatic place on Europe’s Ryder Cup team and said he woke up the next morning having vomited into his beard and down his shirt.

Hatton, 33, recounted the episode during a press conference after being named to his fourth Ryder Cup squad, saying the celebration began with several glasses of wine at dinner and escalated into multiple cocktails and shots. "I had like six glasses of wine at dinner and then I had a double gin and tonic, drunk that at a very normal rate," he said. He added that the group moved on to Disaronno Sours and a string of other drinks before the night turned unpleasant.

"They go down very easily. And then I was starting the chant of basically getting someone to down it, which then every cocktail that followed was a shot," Hatton said. He described later lying face down across the hotel bed and waking up vomiting in that position. "I’ve then fallen back asleep in that position, and then as I’ve woken up, I’ve got sick all down my arms, both sides, all down my shirt. I get off the bed and walk around to the bathroom, look in the mirror, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God,’ I got sick in my face, in my beard."

Hatton said he managed to set an alarm and catch his flight despite the state of the room. He phoned his wife, Emily, and then stripped the bed, left cash and a note apologizing and asking the linens be thrown away. "I feel like I did the right thing upon leaving, but obviously in a pretty bad state," he said.

Hatton will join Europe at Bethpage Black when the Ryder Cup begins Sept. 26. He was one of six automatic qualifiers, along with Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Tommy Fleetwood, Robert MacIntyre and Rasmus Højgaard. Captain Luke Donald announced his six selections earlier in the month: Matt Fitzpatrick, Viktor Hovland, Shane Lowry, Sepp Straka, Ludvig Aberg and Jon Rahm.

Hatton, who plays for Rahm’s Legion XIII squad on the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit, made his Ryder Cup debut in Paris seven years ago and said he was "over the moon" to receive confirmation of his place on this year’s team. He declined to link the incident to his preparations for Bethpage, focusing instead on team selection and the coming matches.

The Ryder Cup, a biennial match-play competition pitting Europe against the United States, will be held at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York. Europe will look to regain the trophy after the most recent contest. Team announcements and captains’ picks have drawn attention in the lead-up to the event, and Hatton’s recounting of the celebrations drew media interest amid final preparations.

Hatton’s comments were made in a public setting on Sept. 10, and his account of the night underscores the social side of modern professional golf as players juggle tour commitments, team events and media duties in the run-up to the Ryder Cup.
