Verstappen wins at Monza as McLaren orders Piastri to yield to Norris after pit error

Max Verstappen held off early pressure to win the Italian Grand Prix at Monza on Sunday, while McLaren sparked controversy by ordering Oscar Piastri to cede second place to team-mate Lando Norris after a delayed pit stop left the Briton behind.

McLaren pitted Piastri a lap before Norris late in the race in the hope a safety car would open an opportunity to attack Verstappen. Piastri had a clean stop on lap 45 with eight laps to go, but Norris suffered a wheel-gun fault during his stop a lap later that extended his service by about four seconds and left him behind Piastri. The team then instructed Piastri to relinquish the position, invoking a precedent from Hungary last year when team strategy led to a similar reversal. Piastri said he disagreed with the decision but complied.

The race had a frantic opening phase with several position changes. Verstappen, who faced early contact with rivals, reclaimed the lead by passing Norris around the outside into the first corner on lap four. After that, the Grand Prix was largely free of major incidents until the late pit stops that decided the top positions.

Verstappen’s victory marked a return to form for Red Bull, though team and pundits noted that the performance could be influenced by Monza’s unique characteristics. Aston Martin endured a weekend of promise that ended in disappointment when Fernando Alonso, who had shown strong pace, was forced to retire with a suspension failure.

The result tightened the fight within McLaren: Piastri’s points lead over Norris was reduced by three to 31 points with eight races remaining in the season. McLaren’s decision to swap the pair after the pit-stop problem is likely to draw scrutiny in the coming weeks as the team balances individual driver ambitions with its broader championship strategy.

Team officials described the instruction as a tactical call rooted in prior team precedent; observers noted that pit-lane problems are an inherent risk of racing and that comparisons between incidents are not always straightforward. Piastri said he accepted the order despite disagreeing, while Norris finished behind Verstappen on the day’s podium.

Sunday’s outcome leaves Red Bull and Verstappen with momentum as the season moves toward its closing rounds, while McLaren must manage internal dynamics between two drivers both vying for the championship. With eight races left, the decisions made at Monza — on strategy, pit procedure and team orders — are expected to be revisited as the title fight intensifies.
