Wagner basketball coach Donald Copeland suspended amid allegations of verbal abuse

Wagner College has suspended men’s basketball coach Donald Copeland while administrators investigate allegations of verbal abuse and mistreatment of players, a move confirmed by the Staten Island school.

According to multiple people familiar with the case, Copeland is accused of verbally abusing several players and denying them water breaks during strenuous practices. One remark attributed to him — 'If you’re thirsty, swallow your spit' — has circulated in discussions about the allegations.

Copeland has not yet been found responsible for the allegations, and there is no public conclusion yet. The complaints prompted Wagner’s inquiry, according to those familiar with the matter.

Roster changes have followed. Only two players returned from last year’s team, and sources said this attrition was largely the result of Copeland’s behavior.

Copeland, who led Wagner to the NCAA Tournament less than two years ago, remains suspended as the college continues its review. The school has not released a timeline for a decision or for any potential changes to the coaching staff.

A Wagner spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for comment. As the investigation unfolds, the program faces questions about leadership, accountability and the impact of coaching conduct on player development and recruitment.
