Wiegman named women's coach of the year as England claim Euro 2025 title

Sarina Wiegman has been named the women's coach of the year at the 2025 Ballon d'Or awards, after guiding England to a second consecutive European Championship title. The Dutch manager, 55, beat four other coaches to the prize, with Chelsea's Sonia Bompastor and Arsenal's Renee Slegers among those recognized.

England secured the Euro 2025 title in Switzerland by beating Spain 3-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in extra time. The victory gave the Lionesses back-to-back European championships, following their triumph on home soil in 2021.

Wiegman’s recognition comes after a year in which England’s women’s program achieved sustained success under her leadership, culminating in the Euro 2025 triumph in Switzerland. The Ballon d'Or award highlighted the top coaches across the continent, acknowledging Wiegman’s role in maintaining England’s place among Europe’s elite.

In addition to Wiegman, four coaches were named as finalists for the award, among them Chelsea’s Sonia Bompastor and Arsenal’s Renee Slegers. The ceremony and its categories spotlight the growth of women’s football across Europe and the impact of coaching on national-team programs as England continues to build on its recent successes.
