Woltemade scores on debut as Newcastle beat Wolves but Wissa faces extended layoff
New signing Nick Woltemade nets decisive goal after just 29 minutes at St James' Park while Yoane Wissa is set to miss games through October with a knee problem

Nick Woltemade marked his Newcastle debut with the only goal of the game as the Magpies beat Wolves 1-0 at St James' Park, but the victory was tempered by news that fellow new signing Yoane Wissa is likely to be sidelined until after the next international break in October.
Woltemade needed just 29 minutes to open his account for Newcastle and received a standing ovation and a new chant from the crowd after being substituted in the second half. The 6ft 6in German, who has four caps for Germany, had been with the club for only a handful of days and had minimal training time with his new team-mates before being handed a start.
Jacob Murphy scooped a cross into the box and Woltemade peeled away from Wolves defender Emmanuel Agbadou to power a header past Sam Johnstone, producing a classic number-nine finish. The goal ended a run of low returns from Newcastle’s attacking play after the side had managed only two goals from 34 shots across the opening three matches of the season.
Manager Eddie Howe praised Woltemade’s distinctiveness and creativity but warned there is work to do to adapt to the Premier League’s physical demands. "He's very distinctive. I think the more you watch him, the more you realise how different he is to the stereotypical size that he brings," Howe said. He added that Woltemade "has a lot to improve to get used to this level" despite winning three of his four aerial duels.
Woltemade completed 89% of his passes and had just 20 touches overall—fewer than any other Newcastle starter—but five of those touches came inside Wolves’ penalty area, one of which produced the match-winner. Match of the Day pundit Shay Given said he was "interested to see the positions he takes up," noting debate about whether Woltemade is more of a number 10 than a traditional nine.
Woltemade acknowledged how new everything still felt. "I was just here for four days now, so everything was new for me," he said. "I think the coach already gave me such a good feeling, so I felt good on the pitch. I knew what to do and I guess you saw today everybody knew what they have to do."
The win came in the first outing following the high-profile departure of Alexander Isak, who completed a £125 million move to Liverpool amid a protracted transfer saga that included the Sweden striker training separately from team-mates as the transfer unfolded. Howe had been seeking a reliable goalscorer after Isak's exit and previous forward options considered by the club moved elsewhere this summer.
Wissa's knee problem, revealed after the match, forced Woltemade into the starting line-up and now threatens Newcastle's forward options further. Club medical staff expect Wissa to be unavailable until after the October international break, extending the period in which Howe will need to manage without a full complement of new attacking signings.
Despite the limited preparation time, Woltemade said he wanted to help and had embraced life in Newcastle, noting he had already been recognised by supporters around the city. Howe indicated the coaching staff will continue to work with Woltemade to refine his positioning and ensure he remains in goal-scoring areas.
Newcastle will look to build on the victory as they prepare for their next Premier League fixture, aiming to convert the numerous chances the team has created into more consistent scoring returns while managing injuries to new additions to the squad.
