Yankees beat Blue Jays 3-1 after lengthy rain delay as playoff chase tightens

The New York Yankees snapped Toronto’s recent dominance with a 3-1 victory Saturday, highlighted by Cody Bellinger’s throw home that prevented the tying run and a three-inning scoreless effort from the bullpen that preserved the lead.

Bellinger’s throw on Nathan Lukes’ single to right field nailed Bo Bichette at the plate to end the top of the sixth, and catcher Austin Wells applied the tag to complete the defensive stand. The play came after a 1:46 rain delay that began following the top of the sixth and helped quell a Blue Jays rally.

Luis Gil gave the Yankees six strong innings, walking four but allowing just one run, extending his recent run of effective starts. New York’s bullpen — which had been inconsistent for much of the season — delivered three scoreless innings to seal the win, with Fernando Cruz and David Bednar combining to record the final seven outs.

The victory moved the Yankees to within three games of first-place Toronto in the American League East. The Blue Jays had been on a roll against New York, winning four straight games and seven of their last eight meetings before Saturday.

"I feel at this point, every win is pretty big," Bellinger said after the game, reflecting on the importance of the result as the regular season winds down.

New York scored the margin of victory on timely offense and sound pitching. The Yankees manufactured runs early and relied on Gil’s length to hand the ball to a bullpen that delivered under pressure. Cruz worked into the later innings and Bednar shut down the game with a scoreless finish.

The sequence in the sixth illustrated the Yankees’ defensive resolve. With Toronto threatening to tie the game, a base hit to right by Lukes forced a throw from the outfield. Bellinger’s relay and Wells’ tag preserved a two-run cushion and shifted momentum back to New York after the rain delay.

Statistically, Gil’s line underscored his value: six innings, one run allowed, and the ability to navigate traffic despite issuing four walks. The bullpen, retooled at the trade deadline, has been an area of emphasis for the Yankees, and Saturday’s combination of Cruz and Bednar offered the type of stability the club sought when it fortified the relief corps.

The win also provided a modest psychological lift. Toronto remains atop the division, but New York’s defense and late-inning relief work have narrowed the gap as the clubs approach the season’s final stretch.

Yankees react

The teams are scheduled to continue the series, with each club looking to tighten or extend its hold in the AL East. For the Yankees, the emphasis will remain on converting tight games into wins, getting consistent starting pitching depth from arms such as Gil, and sustaining the bullpen improvements that surfaced Saturday.
