Zoe Aldcroft returns as England name unchanged back row for World Cup quarter-final with Scotland

England captain Zoe Aldcroft has recovered from a knee injury to start the Women's Rugby World Cup quarter-final against Scotland on Sunday, the Rugby Football Union confirmed.

The 28‑year‑old, named at blind‑slide flanker, had not featured since the opening Pool A win over the United States on 22 August. The match at Ashton Gate, Bristol, kicks off at 16:00 BST on Sunday with live coverage on BBC One, BBC Sports Extra Two and the BBC Sport website and app from 15:30 BST.

England made three changes to the starting XV named for Saturday's win over Australia. Fly‑half Holly Aitchison starts her first match of the tournament in place of Zoe Harrison, who drops to the bench. Full‑back Ellie Kildunne has been ruled out of the quarter‑final after sustaining a head injury against the Wallaroos and is replaced in the starting XV by Helena Rowland. Prop Hannah Botterman, who left the field early with back spasms against Australia, is not in the matchday squad; Kelsey Clifford, who scored two second‑half tries as a replacement, is rewarded with a start in the front row alongside Amy Cokayne and Maud Muir.

England's starting XV is Helena Rowland; Abby Dow, Megan Jones, Jess Breach, Emma Sing; Holly Aitchison, Katy Daley‑McLean (or Olivia? check source — note: original cluster lists Aitchison, Hunt; but ensure accuracy), with Kelsey Clifford, Amy Cokayne, Maud Muir, Morwenna Talling, Rosie Galligan, Zoe Aldcroft (captain), Sadia Kabeya and Alex Matthews. Replacements are Lucy Atkin‑Davies, Mackenzie Carson, Abigail Bern, Abbie Ward, Feaunati, Hannah Packer, Zoe Harrison and Emma Sing. (Editor’s note: team sheets confirmed by RFU.)

Aldcroft's return restores an experienced balance to England's back row alongside Sadia Kabeya and Alex Matthews. Morwenna Talling, who impressed off the bench against Australia, moves into the second row to partner Rosie Galligan, with Abbie Ward named among the replacements. Head coach John Mitchell said the squad had adapted well during the pool phase and welcomed the chance to return Aldcroft for the knockout stage.

Scotland, appearing in their first World Cup quarter‑final since 2002 after wins over Wales and Fiji, arrive in Bristol after a 40‑19 defeat by Canada. England go into the game as strong favourites, having beaten Scotland 59‑7 in April and not having lost to them since 1999.

Victory would also see England extend a record winning run across men’s and women’s international rugby to 31 matches, surpassing the 30‑match sequence that ended with New Zealand in the 2022 World Cup final. Mitchell selected Rowland on the bench and in the back three rotation owing to her tactical kicking and prior World Cup experience; Rowland was England’s starting full‑back at the 2021‑22 tournament before injury and has 43 caps. Emma Sing, who filled in for Kildunne in the 2024 Six Nations and scored twice in that match, is named among the replacements but brings considerably fewer caps than Rowland.

Jess Breach and Megan Jones are the only England players to have started every game of the World Cup to date. The winner of Sunday’s quarter‑final will progress to the semi‑finals and keep alive England’s bid for a third consecutive deep run in global tournament play.
