Zoe Aldcroft returns to captain England for Women's Rugby World Cup quarter-final with Scotland
Aldcroft back from knee injury and makes one of four changes as England prepare to face Scotland at Ashton Gate

Zoe Aldcroft has been named to captain England for their Women's Rugby World Cup quarter-final against Scotland at Ashton Gate on Sunday after recovering from a knee problem that forced her to miss two pool games.
Aldcroft, 28, returns at blindside flanker and is one of four changes to the side that started England's victory over Australia in Brighton. Holly Aitchison makes her first start of the tournament at fly-half, Helena Rowland replaces Ellie Kildunne at full-back after Kildunne was ruled out with concussion, and loosehead prop Kelsey Clifford — who scored twice off the bench against Australia — comes into the front row. Hannah Botterman drops out after failing to recover from a back issue sustained in Brighton.
England head coach John Mitchell described the quarter-final as "a new stage of the competition that has an end point," saying his team had adapted well through the pool phase and would look to build pressure on an improving Scotland side. "We trust our girls to be consistent, take ownership of their roles, embrace the occasion and earn the right to another week in this competition," Mitchell said, noting that England have dominated previous meetings between the two nations in the Women's Six Nations.
England qualified from Pool A with comfortable wins and enter the knockout stages as expected. Scotland, who have shown improvement during the tournament, will provide what Mitchell termed the team's toughest test so far. The coaching staff hope Kildunne will be available should England progress to the semi-finals.
The match is scheduled for a 4pm kick-off at Ashton Gate and will be shown on the BBC. England's starting XV announced for the fixture reads: Helena Rowland; Abby Dow, Megan Jones, Tatyana Heard, Jess Breach; Holly Aitchison, Natasha Hunt; Kelsey Clifford, Amy Cokayne, Maud Muir, Morwenna Talling, Rosie Galligan, Zoe Aldcroft (capt), Sadia Kabeya, Alex Matthews. The named replacements are Lark Atkin-Davies, Mackenzie Carson, Sarah Bern, Abbie Ward, Maddie Feaunati, Lucy Packer, Zoe Harrison and Emma Sing.
Mitchell highlighted the growing enthusiasm and support around the tournament and said England expected Bristol to provide a strong atmosphere. The selection of Aldcroft as captain restores experience to the back row for a team aiming to navigate the single-elimination phase and maintain its status as one of the pre-tournament favourites.
