iOS 26 Update Brings Smarter Messages, Location Sharing and More
Apple's latest iPhone software adds spam filtering, polls in iMessage, customizable alarms and other conveniences

Apple released iOS 26, the latest iPhone software update, introducing a suite of new features designed to simplify daily use and bolster security. The update, which requires a charged device and a Wi-Fi connection, is available for iPhone 11 and newer models through the iPhone 17 lineup and certain earlier devices such as the iPhone SE second generation and later.
Among the changes, smarter spam message detection helps keep the primary inbox cleaner by funneling suspected spam into an Unknown Senders folder. Users can review messages there, mark trusted contacts, or delete clutter without loud lock screen alerts. The feature aims to reduce nuisance texts without blocking legitimate messages.
Another improvement lets users share their location from Maps without opening the app. A user can touch and hold the Maps icon to send location via AirDrop or Messages, making it easier to share directions with friends or family.
iOS 26 also adds a way to view call history by contact. When opening a contact in the Phone app, users can see all calls with that person in one place, smoothing the process of tracking conversations without scrolling through the entire log.
Text in a message can now be selected more precisely. Long press a message to pull out just the part you need, with options to copy, look up, translate, search the web, or share it directly.
Apple also lets users disable tap recents to call. This reduces accidental dialing by requiring an extra press to initiate a call from a Recents entry, preventing embarrassing mistakes.
Alarm snooze duration can be customized. In the Clock app, users can set snooze times from 1 to 15 minutes, allowing a shorter wake up or a longer morning reset.
A new lens cleaning hint warns when the camera lens appears dirty or hazy. If the lens is dirty, the Camera app displays a notice to clean the lens before capturing a photo.
iOS 26 also shows an estimated time to full charge when the device is plugged in. The Lock Screen updates with charging time estimates, and users can confirm the estimate in the Battery settings.
Lock Screen clock size can be adjusted for a bolder display. Users can customize the clock by long pressing the Lock Screen, tapping customize, and using a handle to resize the clock. Some wallpapers also enable dynamic depth effects.
Group chats gain new polling capability in iMessage. Users can create quick polls within a conversation to gather opinions on options such as where to dine or what movie to watch, with friends voting directly in the chat.
Apple notes that iOS 26 builds on security improvements and personalization. The update is designed to be easy to install, typically taking a few minutes, with a straightforward set of steps: Settings, General, Software Update, then Upgrade to iOS 26, followed by any on screen prompts and a device restart. Compatible devices include iPhone 11 through iPhone 17 series and the iPhone SE 2nd generation and later.

Users are encouraged to update to access new tools and improved safeguards as part of the ongoing effort to keep devices safer and more capable. The update also reflects a broader push toward convenience and personalization in mobile operating systems.
