Polestar 5 unveiled as flagship electric Grand Tourer with high-end tech and sustainability focus

Polestar unveiled its Polestar 5 on Monday in Munich, presenting a four-door electric Grand Tourer the company positions as its flagship model. The five-metre car combines high-performance drivetrains, advanced charging and driver-assistance technology, and an interior built from recycled and natural materials; prices start just under £90,000 for the Dual motor Launch Edition, with the Performance Launch Edition priced from £104,900.

The Polestar 5 is offered in two launch configurations. Polestar says the Dual motor Launch Edition produces 748 hp and accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds, while the Performance Launch Edition generates 884 hp and covers 0 to 62 mph in 3.2 seconds. Both variants have a claimed top speed of 150 mph. Range estimates include up to 416 miles for the Dual motor version and about 351 miles for the Performance model. The vehicle uses an 800-volt lithium-ion battery capable of charging at up to 350 kW on a suitable charger, with a 10-to-80 percent recharge time of roughly 22 minutes.

Polestar described aviation as the primary inspiration for the 5, prioritising aerodynamics in the exterior design. The company highlighted a taut surface and what it called an "aerodynamic wing-like profile with Kamm-style tail," along with a low nose, close wheel-to-bonnet relationship and a rear light bar designed to improve airflow. Polestar quotes a drag coefficient of 0.24 for the Dual Motor variant, crediting features such as flush frameless glass, retractable door handles and an integrated rear diffuser.

Underpinning the model is a bespoke aluminium platform that forms the Polestar Performance Architecture (PPA). Polestar said the platform delivers torsional rigidity higher than that of a two-seat supercar. The 4+1-seat GT is described principally as a four-seater; Polestar noted that a rear centre armrest can be raised to create a fifth seat. The rear cabin was reworked to preserve passenger space, with the rear header structure moved behind the occupants' heads and a battery "foot garage" cut-out that provides additional rear floor space.

Polestar's sustainability claims for the 5 focus on interior materials and weight savings. The company said it used natural-fibre composites from BComp for seatbacks and door components, ampliTex bio-based carbon-fibre alternatives derived from flax, recycled PET for luggage compartments, and recycled fishing nets and other waste materials for several interior trims. Polestar also included a large panoramic glass roof, which it said is the largest ever fitted to a Polestar model.

Technology features include a digital rear view system and a virtual rear window in place of a conventional rear-view mirror, a nine-inch driver display mounted to an electrically adjustable steering column, a 9.5-inch head-up display and a 14.5-inch portrait-orientation central touchscreen. Polestar continued its integration of Google services, offering Google-built-in infotainment with user-customisable tiles and shortcuts. Audio options include either a 10- or 21-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system combined with active road-noise cancellation.

The Polestar 5 incorporates a sensor pack the company calls SmartZone, which houses radar, sensors and a forward-facing parking camera and is designed to work with Polestar's Pilot Assist driver-assistance functions. Polestar described the combination as delivering a broad set of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).

Polestar Chief Executive Michael Lohscheller called the 5 "a guiding star for the industry and the perfect Polestar flagship." Nahum Escobedo, head of exterior design, said designing the road-going version of the Precept concept that inspired the 5 "was a dream" and that he looked forward to customers driving the car.

The 5 expands Polestar's model range to four cars, following the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 introduced in the previous year. Polestar said the 5 will be offered in six exterior colours, including two matte options, and that the Performance Launch Edition will be available to early buyers at a higher price point than the standard Dual motor Launch Edition.

Polestar's announcement places emphasis on marrying performance with sustainability and advanced in-car technology, reflecting trends among premium electric-vehicle makers that promote high power outputs alongside rapid charging and novel interior materials. The model goes on sale immediately in markets where Polestar operates, with local availability and specifications subject to regional regulatory approvals and ordering processes.
