Polestar unveils 5 Grand Tourer, a high‑performance, sustainability‑focused flagship EV

Polestar on Monday revealed the Polestar 5, a four‑door electric Grand Tourer the Swedish marque calls its flagship and which it says combines high performance with a focus on sustainable materials. The model was unveiled in Munich and goes on sale immediately, with the dual‑motor Launch Edition priced at £89,500 and the Performance Launch Edition from £104,900.

The Polestar 5 spans about five metres and is offered in two main performance specifications. The Dual‑motor Launch Edition produces 748 hp and covers 0–62 mph in 3.9 seconds, while the Performance Launch Edition produces 884 hp and covers 0–62 mph in 3.2 seconds; both are limited to a top speed of 150 mph. Polestar cites a drag coefficient of 0.24 for the Dual‑motor car and an 800‑volt lithium‑ion battery that supports ultra‑rapid charging up to 350 kW, enabling a 10–80 percent top‑up in about 22 minutes on a suitable charger.

Polestar described aviation as the primary design inspiration, prioritising aerodynamics through a wing‑like profile, low nose, Kamm‑style tail and a flush glass surface. The exterior incorporates gloss black or Shade cladding along the lower doors and an aero‑efficient light bar with an integrated diffuser and rear vent detail. The company said the 5 rides on a bespoke aluminium platform that forms the Polestar Performance Architecture (PPA) and delivers torsional rigidity it compares to that of two‑seat supercars.

The cabin is positioned as a four‑seat GT with a 4+1 option: the rear armrest can be raised to accommodate a fifth passenger. Polestar moved the rear header structure behind occupants’ heads and introduced a virtual rear window and a digital rear‑view mirror in place of a conventional mirror—a design choice carried over from the Polestar 4. Rear passengers gain additional floor space through a battery cut‑out Polestar calls a “foot garage,” and the model offers the largest panoramic glass roof in the brand’s lineup.

Sustainability is central to the interior package. Seat backs are made from BComp natural‑fibre composite, the company uses ampliTex bio‑based carbon‑fibre alternatives derived from flax, and other cabin surfaces incorporate recycled PET and reclaimed materials including recycled fishing nets and waste carpets. Polestar said these materials reduce weight while lowering environmental impact.

Infotainment and driver aids align with the company’s recent technology strategy. The 5 features Google built‑in, a nine‑inch driver display mounted to an electrically adjustable steering column, a 9.5‑inch head‑up display and a 14.5‑inch portrait central touchscreen with customizable tiles and shortcuts. Audio options include Bowers & Wilkins 10‑ or 21‑speaker systems paired with Active Road Noise Cancellation. The SmartZone sensor array, which houses radar and a forward‑facing camera, works with the vehicle’s Pilot Assist package to deliver a suite of advanced driver assistance systems.

Polestar highlighted electrical range figures that vary by specification: the Dual‑motor model is rated at about 416 miles on a single charge, while the Performance version is rated at approximately 351 miles. The company also added small convenience touches such as an external charging indicator in the C‑pillar.

Michael Lohscheller, Polestar CEO, said the 5 is “a guiding star for the industry and the perfect Polestar flagship.” Nahum Escobedo, head of exterior design, described the process of turning the Precept concept into a production car as a ‘‘dream’’ and said he looked forward to customers driving the finished vehicle.

The Polestar 5 extends the brand’s portfolio to four models a year after the launches of the Polestar 3 and 4, underscoring the company’s push from a single‑model lineup to a broader range. Buyers can choose from six exterior colours, including two matte finishes, and order specifications that emphasise either long range or peak performance.

Polestar has not released global production figures with the Munich reveal. The car’s pricing places it firmly in the luxury segment, and the company will face established premium automakers as it brings the 5 to market in the coming months.
