AOC denounces resolution honoring Charlie Kirk as House splits over tribute after assassination

AOC used the House floor Friday to oppose a resolution honoring the life and legacy of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated Sept. 10 during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University. In her remarks, she argued the measure was introduced on a purely partisan basis, rather than to unite Congress. After condemning Kirk’s murder, she said the resolution brings pain to millions of Americans who endured segregation, Jim Crow and the legacy of bigotry today.

The resolution described Kirk as a 'devoted Christian', a 'dedicated husband' and a 'loving father' of two, explaining his founding of Turning Point USA and commending his advocacy for the First Amendment. It resolved the House to condemn Kirk's assassination and all forms of political violence; commend law enforcement for catching his alleged killer; extend condolences to Kirk's family; honor Kirk's life, leadership and legacy; and call upon all Americans—regardless of race, party affiliation, or creed—to reject political violence, recommit to respectful debate, uphold American values, and respect one another as fellow Americans.

The chamber split along party lines on the measure. AOC was joined by 57 other Democrats in voting against the resolution, while 95 Democrats voted to adopt it, including Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Whip Katherine Clark and Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar. The vote highlighted ongoing debates about how lawmakers respond to political violence and how memorials should be framed when tied to controversial figures.

In her remarks, Ocasio-Cortez said Kirk's rhetoric and beliefs were 'ignorant, uneducated' and sought to disenfranchise millions of Americans, not the unity claimed by the majority in the resolution. Her remarks were part of a broader clash over how to summarize a public figure's legacy in a legislative tribute.

Kirk's public remarks cited by critics trace back through several episodes. In a February 2, 2024, episode of his Fearless program, Kirk acknowledged that his views on the Civil Rights Act were provocative and said he had extensively researched the era and its outcomes. He argued the Civil Rights era produced both desegregation and the expansion of federal power, arguing that it led to a broader government role in hiring and quotas.

On October 31, 2022, in a segment about the attack on Paul Pelosi, Kirk characterized the attack and later discussed disparities in cashless bail policy. He condemned the violence but questioned how the legal system treats different cases in different jurisdictions.

In a October 26, 2024 episode of The Charlie Kirk Show, he asserted that Jewish donors have funded various cultural movements and claimed that some Jewish organizations supported left-leaning or DEI-driven ideas. He later said he does not intend to generalize about all Jewish people and that he did not like broad generalizations. Critics highlighted these comments as part of a long-running dispute over his rhetoric and its reception.

The House resolution described its purpose as honoring Kirk’s life and leadership, condemning political violence, and encouraging civil discourse. The division among Democrats over the measure underscored ongoing tensions about how to balance memorials with partisan backlash and how rhetoric interacts with public safety.

The episode adds to a broader national conversation about political rhetoric, assault on public figures, and the boundaries of debate in the United States.
