Donalds fires back at Rashida Tlaib after ‘fascist’ jab during Oversight hearing

WASHINGTON — A shouting match erupted during a House Oversight Committee hearing Thursday after Rep. Rashida Tlaib described President Trump’s Washington, D.C., crime crackdown as a "fascist takeover." The moment underscored partisan tensions as lawmakers debated crime and policing in the nation’s capital.

During the hearing, Tlaib accused her Republican colleagues of distorting the crime situation to support the president’s agenda, saying, "I don’t see what they see. I don’t understand why we’re allowing that to happen, because I actually think it’s going to hurt our communities." As the exchange grew heated, Rep. Byron Donalds pressed back after Tlaib’s time expired, but she continued to speak. Donalds calmly retorted, "Mr. Chairman, I think it’s insane that the gentlelady doesn’t have an argument so she’s going to refer to me and some of my colleagues like we were from the Third Reich – this is insane. Do I look like a member of the Third Reich to you, Ms. Tlaib?" The Florida Republican raised his voice to be heard over the din as Tlaib kept speaking.

Donalds, a Florida Republican and a vocal supporter of Trump’s crime-fighting emphasis in the capital, pressed his line on the exchange over what he called improper conduct and lingering questions about voting consistency. Tlaib accused Donalds of voting on the House floor earlier this year when he allegedly was not in town, while Donalds pressed back on the broader issue of procedure and accountability. The back-and-forth continued as House Oversight Chairman James Comer tried to bring order to the proceeding and keep the panel focused on policy questions rather than personal rhetoric. Tlaib chanted, "Free DC! Free DC!" as Comer sought to restore decorum and proceed with the hearing.

After the hearing, Donalds told reporters he viewed Tlaib’s rhetoric as an attempt to brand him and other Republicans as fascists, a subject he said remains painful in the wake of last week’s assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. "She used the exact same irresponsible rhetoric that inspired Tyler Robinson and was completely out-of-line," Donalds wrote on X, citing the suspected killer linked to Kirk’s death. The exchange highlighted the volatile intersection of crime policy, political rhetoric and the ongoing tensions within Congress over how to address public safety in Washington, D.C. and the country at large.
