Vice President Kamala Harris says she did not realize she had 'pulled the pin on a hand grenade' with her remarks about President Joe Biden during a pre-election appearance on The View, according to an Associated Press report tied to her forthcoming memoir, 107 Days. AP reports that when asked during the same interview whether she would have done anything differently than Biden, she replied that nothing comes to mind and added that she had 'been a part of … most of the decisions that have had impact'.

In 107 Days, Harris writes that she did not want to criticize the president or litigate matters on which they disagreed, but she did not grasp the extent to which her connection with Biden was weighing on her presidential bid. 'My staff were beside themselves' regarding how she had handed a 'gift to the Trump campaign,' the AP report says. The memoir notes that Harris did not intend to attack Biden, but the exchange, and her broader positioning in the race, became a focal point of scrutiny during the campaign.

Harris also writes that she could barely breathe when she learned she had lost to Donald Trump in the 2024 election, a defeat that culminated in his capture of both the Electoral College and the popular vote. The Associated Press account describes the moment as a sobering realization about the direction of the country and her political future. The interview on The View, conducted in the run-up to the vote, remains a touchstone in discussions about how her public posture toward Biden may have affected outsiders’ perceptions of a joint ticket.

This year, Harris announced that she would not pursue a bid for California governor in 2026. In a statement issued in late July, she said that after serious consideration, she would not ask the people of California for the privilege to serve as their governor. The decision closes a chapter on a possible statewide ascent tied to the same leadership that had largely defined her national profile throughout the 2020s. The AP profile of the memoir provides context for that decision and situates it within the broader arc of her time in national politics, including her 2024 campaign and the subsequent political landscape in Washington and Sacramento.
