ICE detainee dies in Nassau County jail; state AG launches investigation
A 42-year-old detainee died about 18 hours after arriving at the Nassau County jail; authorities say investigations are ongoing; 12 ICE detainees have died this year.

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainee died Thursday in a Nassau County jail in New York, authorities said. The 42-year-old man, who has not been publicly identified, died about 18 hours after arriving at the jail, News 12 Long Island reported. Nassau County Sheriff Anthony LaRocco said there is an ongoing investigation that will be thorough and transparent to determine the cause of death, adding that the county takes seriously its obligation to treat every prisoner humanely.
The New York State Attorney General’s Office has also launched an investigation into the death, authorities said.
ICE said the death is under investigation and that it is cooperating with local authorities. The agency did not immediately provide further details.
In a broader context, advocates and lawmakers have scrutinized ICE operations amid ongoing debates over immigration enforcement. At least 12 people have died in ICE custody so far this year, according to multiple counts, underscoring ongoing concerns about prison and detention conditions and the transparency of investigations following such deaths. Critics have pointed to arrests conducted in public spaces, sometimes involving agents in masks to conceal identities, as part of a broader pattern that has drawn public and political attention. Officials stressing accountability indicate investigations are expected to run their course, with findings released as they become available.
