A federal grand jury indicted James Comey on charges that he lied to Congress during his Sept. 30, 2020 testimony in the Trump-Russia investigation. Minutes later, Comey's son-in-law, Troy Edwards Jr., resigned from his post as a senior national security prosecutor in the Eastern District of Virginia, the same office now prosecuting Comey.

Comey, 64, served as FBI director from 2013 until he was fired by President Donald Trump in 2017. He has pleaded not guilty and is expected to surrender Friday.

Edwards submitted a one-sentence resignation letter to U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan, saying he was leaving "to uphold my oath to the Constitution and the country".

News of Edwards' resignation comes as Comey's eldest daughter, Maureen Comey, was fired from a federal prosecutor position in Manhattan in July. She later filed a lawsuit alleging she was terminated "solely or substantially because her father is former FBI Director James B. Comey".

The indictment and the personnel move underscore the high-profile scrutiny of the FBI's leadership and the Trump-era investigations. The Eastern District of Virginia, which handles national security prosecutions, is the same office involved in the Comey case and has overseen other matters tied to the investigations of that era.

As the legal process moves forward, observers will watch for further court actions and any additional personnel developments in the offices connected to the Comey matter.
