Mourners Prepare for Charlie Kirk Memorial at State Farm Stadium

A public memorial service for Charlie Kirk is set for Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, with tens of thousands of mourners expected to attend and a line of high-profile speakers planned to honor the right-wing commentator who was killed at a campus event last week.

The 31-year-old Turning Point USA co-founder was shot and killed during an open-air speaking event at Utah Valley University on September 10. In the days since, officials have described growing security concerns as supporters and critics alike weigh the implications for free speech and political violence in American life. Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, will be among those speaking, as will several political figures who have publicly aligned with the cause and mission she has continued to push forward.

The service is being held at the home of the Arizona Cardinals, State Farm Stadium, which is capable of seating roughly 63,000 people. Organizers say tens of thousands are expected as former President Donald Trump has personally requested the venue for the memorial, inviting mourners traveling from across the country. Trump is expected to attend and speak, alongside Erika Kirk and other notable figures, including Vice President candidates and White House aides who participated in Kirk’s public life.

The initial public roster released by Turning Point USA includes Erika Kirk; President Donald Trump; Vice President hopeful JD Vance; White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles; Secretary of State Marco Rubio; Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy Jr.; Secretary of War Pete Hegseth; Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard; former Fox News host Tucker Carlson; Trump Jr.; Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller; and Sergio Gor, director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office. Additional speakers from the Trump orbit were still to be announced as organizers refined the guest list. A separate worship segment featuring Christian singers was also announced as part of the program.

Security preparations are expected to be extensive. Local law enforcement have described the preparations as akin to those for major events such as the Super Bowl, with police pledging broad deployments and interagency coordination. Bomb squads and tactical units will be on standby, and Secret Service officials said joint security planning is underway and that information about safety measures would be shared as the process matures. Some experts and former agents cautioned that a high-profile memorial could become a potential target, and authorities said countermeasures are being considered, including vehicle security and crowd management. Authorities have previously heightened security at Turning Point USA events amid threats and concerns over violent incidents.

Authorities also faced a separate security incident at Kirk’s organization’s headquarters earlier in the week when a bomb squad investigated a suspicious bag left outside the building. No threats were reported and the scene was cleared without incident, but the event underscored the heightened vigilance surrounding the memorial.

Attendees are being asked to arrive early, with parking available from 7 a.m. local time. The stadium, which will operate on a first-come, first-served basis, will open indoor overflow spaces at the adjacent Desert Diamond Arena if seating runs short. Organizers have asked guests to wear red, white and blue and to dress in “Sunday best.” Entry will involve metal detectors and a pat-down as a precaution, and a long list of prohibited items includes alcohol, weapons, drones, and bags deemed obscene or indecent. Those who refuse security screening will be denied entry.

President Joe Biden’s administration asked that all American flags be flown at half-mast until 6 p.m. on Sunday in Charlie Kirk’s honor, reflecting a national gesture being coordinated in some quarters with the local observance.

In addition to the Arizona memorial, private events are planned in the days leading up to the service. A prayer vigil for Kirk is also scheduled near the White House and United States Capitol on Sunday, drawing lawmakers, staff members and supporters who plan to participate in the observance from across the country.

In Utah, police have continued to pursue the investigation into Kirk’s death. Suspect Tyler Robinson, 22, was arrested on September 12 and appeared in court by video link on September 17. He faces seven charges, including aggravated murder and witness tampering, and prosecutors have signaled they intend to seek the death penalty based on the circumstances of the crime. No plea had been entered as of the latest proceedings.

Erika Kirk, in a tearful public address, said her husband’s work would continue despite his death. She vowed to carry forward his campus-focused movement and confirmed that the couple’s tour would resume in the autumn, with more stops planned in the coming years. “You have no idea the fire that you have ignited within this wife,” she said, describing the impact of her husband’s death and urging supporters to join in sustaining his mission.
