Schumer questions Epstein as potential factor in Kimmel cancellation
Senate leader hints at motive behind Nexstar decision after late-night host’s remarks about Charlie Kirk; Trump weighs in amid renewed Epstein discourse

WASHINGTON — Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Thursday raised a provocative question on social media, asking whether Jeffrey Epstein’s name might be the “real reason” Jimmy Kimmel Live! was canceled. The post appeared as Nexstar Media Group announced that it would preempt the ABC-affiliate late-night program for the foreseeable future after Kimmel’s comments about Charlie Kirk and his alleged assassin prompted backlash. Schumer’s post included a screenshot of a New York Times article detailing Epstein documents that have been used by late-night hosts to roast President Trump over his alleged ties to the financier. Nexstar, which operates hundreds of local television stations, said in a press release that Kimmel’s remarks about the death of Charlie Kirk’s purported assassin were “offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse,” adding that continuing to air the show “is simply not in the public interest at the current time.” Andrew Alford, Nexstar’s chief broadcasting officer, said the company would replace Kimmel with other programming while the situation is reassessed and “cooler heads prevail.”
Trump weighed in on the matter during a news conference in the United Kingdom, saying Kimmel was fired for “bad ratings” and for making a controversial remark about Charlie Kirk. The former president, who appeared alongside UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, added that Kimmel is “not a talented person” and should have been removed from the air “a long time ago.” Trump also promoted his position on Truth Social, calling the cancellation “great news for America.”
Kimmel’s comments cited by critics involved accusations that conservatives were attempting to cast Charlie Kirk’s death as the work of left-wing forces. The exchange is part of a broader, long-running political debate about late-night comedy’s role in shaping discourse, a debate that intensified after the Epstein material related to various public figures surfaced in recent days.

In the broader context, observers note that Jimmy Kimmel Live! has faced audience erosion for years. A report cited in the coverage indicated the program has
