Surgeon: Charlie Kirk’s neck wound did not exit the body, ‘miracle’ cited by TPUSA spokesman

The surgeon who operated on Charlie Kirk said the high-velocity bullet that struck the conservative activist did not exit his neck, a development that Andrew Kolvet, a spokesman for Turning Point USA, described as a miracle that may have prevented injuries to bystanders. Kolvet said he spoke directly with Kirk’s surgeon, who explained that in most high-powered rifle wounds the bullet traverses the body; in Kirk’s case, the projectile apparently did not exit the neck. The surgeon’s account, relayed by Kolvet on social media, suggested the wound was extraordinary given the round’s caliber and the bone density reportedly involved. The coroner later reported the bullet was found just beneath Kirk’s skin, reinforcing the notion of a through-and-through risk that did not materialize.

Kirk was fatally shot on September 10 during a live debate at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. It was the first stop on his “American Comeback Tour,” and a tent bearing the phrase “Prove Me Wrong” had been erected for the event. The incident occurred as Kirk & others discussed transgender mass shooters; the event was livestreamed, and attendees captured multiple angles of the shooting, which quickly circulated on social media. Kirk was carried from the stage by private security and rushed to a hospital, where he died. In the hours after the shooting, then-President Donald Trump publicly acknowledged Kirk’s death, highlighting Kirk’s influence on younger voters and in swing states.

Authorities identified Tyler Robinson, 22, as a person of interest in Kirk’s killing and arrested him on September 12. He later appeared in court wearing what authorities described as an anti-suicide vest and faces seven counts, including capital murder. The FBI released photographs of the suspect on September 11 showing a man in an American flag shirt with sunglasses and a hat; investigators said the suspect’s mother recognized him from the images, and his father helped bring him to authorities to turn himself in.

The shooting prompted a swift campus lockdown and widespread concern about public safety at political events. Kirk’s death reverberated through conservative circles, where he had been a prominent organizer in multiple states and an advocate for energizing younger voters. Trump has repeatedly credited Kirk’s activism with shaping Republican efforts in the 2024 election cycle, noting in a Fox News appearance that Charlie attracted unprecedented attention from young people.

A memorial service for Kirk is planned as a televised tribute at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, near Phoenix. The event will feature eulogies from Donald Trump, JD Vance and Erika Kirk, the activist’s widow, reflecting Kirk’s role as a widely followed conservative organizer and media figure. As investigators continue to pursue details of the case, the focus remains on how Kirk’s activities and the reactions of his supporters and critics shaped political dialogue in the months leading up to and following his death.
