Surgeon describes 'miracle' wound in Charlie Kirk shooting as memorial service set

The surgeon who operated on Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk said the bullet that killed him did not exit his neck, an apparent miracle that likely prevented harm to bystanders, according to Andrew Kolvet, a TPUSA spokesman who spoke with the surgeon. Kirk was fatally shot during a live debate at Utah Valley University in Orem on Sept. 10. It was the first stop on his American Comeback Tour, and he was at a tent bearing the words Prove Me Wrong when the shot occurred. He was livestreaming the event and was carried from the stage by private security to a hospital, where he died. The shooting drew rapid attention on social media, with multiple angles of the moment circulating widely; President Donald Trump publicly announced Kirk's death in the hours that followed.

The rifle used is a .30-06 bolt-action, a caliber commonly employed in big-game hunting. The surgeon noted that rounds of this type typically pass through a body, and the fact that the bullet did not exit Kirk’s neck was described as extraordinary. A coroner’s report later indicated the bullet was found just beneath the skin, a detail that underscored the surgeon’s assessment of the wound as a remarkable occurrence.

Authorities identified the alleged shooter as Tyler Robinson, 22. He was arrested on Sept. 12 and faces seven counts, including capital murder, in connection with Kirk’s death. He appeared in court wearing an anti-suicide vest. Earlier in the investigation, the FBI released photos of the suspect on Sept. 11; Robinson’s mother identified him in the images, and his father confirmed the identification, prompting his surrender.

The case has elicited political reaction, with Trump noting Kirk’s work in mobilizing younger voters and voters in swing states as a factor in his 2024 victory. Kirk’s death prompted a public response from the former president, who described him as an incredibly talented organizer who did not deserve such a fate. A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. ET on Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., where Erika Kirk and JD Vance are among the expected speakers, along with Trump. The service will be televised.

As investigators continue to review security at the event and the surrounding circumstances, the shooting has intensified debate about safety at political gatherings on college campuses and the role of youth engagement in national politics.
