An Amarillo, Texas, student is hospitalized in critical condition after a suspected drunken-driving crash that authorities say launched his SUV into the air and ignited a fire that burned for hours. Aidan Poole, 19, was returning to Texas Tech on Sept. 7 after dog-sitting for his parents in Amarillo when a Porsche slammed into his SUV, according to KCBD. Officials said the Porsche, driven by Thomas Rich, 44, of Midland, was traveling at an excessive rate of speed when it struck Poole's vehicle, sending the SUV airborne and causing the gas tank to explode. Poole managed to escape by unlocking the car door, but he suffered catastrophic burns and underwent multiple surgeries as a result of the blaze, the family said on a GoFundMe page.

Rich, a director at Chief Oilfield Technologies LLC, faces intoxication assault charges and was released on bail Tuesday, authorities said. Rich lives in a $1.2 million home in Midland, and prosecutors say the crash occurred while he was driving at an excessive speed. The investigation remains active, and officials said more charges are expected as evidence is reviewed.

Poole, an honors student who just started his sophomore year at Texas Tech, survived the fiery crash thanks to quick action and luck. His mother, Kristi Poole, said her son was determined to escape and that he fought to free himself from the burning SUV: "His determination to get out of there. He knew how to keep his eyes closed because there was so much fire." The teen spent weeks in a hospital burn unit in Lubbock before being moved to an inpatient rehabilitation facility; his family has stayed by his side as he recovers.

The crash destroyed much of Poole's belongings, including school supplies and clothing, and his family described a profound disruption to his life and plans. He is an honors student and a current sophomore; in addition to studies, he enjoys rock climbing, video games, and time with his longtime girlfriend, Jadzia Adams, who has remained at his side throughout the ordeal. Family members say they are grateful for the support of friends, coworkers, and donors who have contributed to his GoFundMe campaign, which has raised about $35,000 as of late Wednesday afternoon to help cover medical and living expenses.

Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing and that more charges could follow as auditors and investigators review evidence. Rich was released on bail after his arrest and booking on intoxication assault charges, and prosecutors indicated that additional charges may be filed as the case progresses. The case comes amid broader policy debates in Texas over drunk-driving enforcement and road-safety measures.
