Trump administration forms coalition with TPUSA to promote civics education in schools

The Trump administration on Constitution Day announced a partnership with Turning Point USA and more than 40 organizations to promote civics education for young people, launching the American 250 Civics Education Coalition. Partners include conservative groups such as PragerU, Hillsdale College, Moms for Liberty, and the America First Policy Institute. The Department of Education described the effort as a landmark initiative dedicated to renewing patriotism, strengthening civic knowledge and advancing a shared understanding of America’s founding principles in schools nationwide, as the country looks toward next year’s 250th anniversary.

Under the oversight of Education Secretary Linda E. McMahon, the coalition aims to foster conversations about citizenship and America’s values across classrooms and campuses. McMahon said on Wednesday that young Americans need to be equipped with an understanding of American history and values. "As America approaches 250 years since its founding, we are proud to announce this coalition to ensure every young American understands the beauty of our nation and is equipped with the civic knowledge required to contribute meaningfully to its future," she said.

Turning Point USA, which includes Turning Point Education, will help coordinate outreach as part of the coalition. Dr. Hutz H. Hertzberg, Chief Education Officer of Turning Point Education, said the coalition will advance God-centered, virtuous education for students flourishing across our nation. "Turning Point USA, which includes Turning Point Education, is more resolved than ever to advance God-centered, virtuous education for students flourishing across our nation," Hertzberg added.

The partnership brings together groups such as PragerU, Hillsdale College and Moms for Liberty, as well as the America First Policy Institute, with the aim of renewing patriotism and civic knowledge ahead of the 250th anniversary. The coalition’s organizers noted a surge in campus engagement and outreach, with Turning Point USA reporting significant interest in starting new high school and college chapters. The organization has said it has received more than 60,000 new requests to start chapters, reflecting broad enthusiasm for civics conversations across schools.

According to the notes, Erika Kirk was named chief executive officer and chair of the board at Turning Point USA, a leadership change the group said aligns with its expanded nationwide outreach. As part of that expansion, the coalition has emphasized practical civics discussions, teacher resources and student-led activities designed to help young people explore American ideals and responsibilities.

The coalition’s unveiling on Constitution Day underscores the administration’s emphasis on civics as a core component of education policy. Officials said the American 250 Civics Education Coalition will work with school districts, state departments of education and local communities to foster informed dialogue about citizenship and American founding principles. Supporters say the initiative aims to complement classroom instruction with civic dialogues that illuminate how constitutional rights and civic duties intersect in daily life. While details on funding, curricula or accountability measures were not released in the initial rollout, officials stressed that participation is voluntary and aligned with existing state standards for social studies and civics education.

The effort comes as debates over how civics should be taught in schools have intensified in recent years, with policymakers on both sides of the aisle arguing over curriculum content, parental involvement and the role of nonprofit organizations in shaping classroom conversations. Proponents of the coalition say it reflects a broad, citizen-led approach to renewing engagement with American founding principles, while critics caution that partisan groups should not disproportionately influence public education. The coalition’s organizers say the aim is to present balanced, historically grounded discussions and to empower students to think critically about their rights and responsibilities as citizens.

As the country approaches its 250th anniversary, educators and lawmakers will be watching how this coalition influences classroom conversations about civics, patriotism and the values that underpin American democracy. The collaboration also serves as a test of how schools navigate partnerships with nonprofit and policy-oriented organizations, and how such alliances shape the public understanding of civics at a time when many students report limited exposure to foundational U.S. history in some districts.
