Trump hails Charlie Kirk as martyr for American freedom at Arizona memorial

GLENDALE, Ariz. — President Donald Trump described Charlie Kirk as a 'martyr for American freedom' during a public memorial Sunday at State Farm Stadium, as thousands gathered to honor the Turning Point USA founder. In remarks that blended politics with faith, Trump credited Kirk with helping him win the 2024 election by energizing young voters and said he would soon honor Kirk at the White House with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The president closed his remarks by sharing the stage with Kirk's widow, Erika, and embracing her as 'America the Beautiful' played through the stadium.

Erika Kirk, the late activist's widow, delivered a tearful, standing-ovation speech honoring her husband's legacy and calling for a revival of faith. She invoked scripture and referred to Charlie as 'my Charlie,' describing the hours after his death and the pain she experienced. 'Being a follower of Christ is not easy, it's not supposed to be,' she said, and she forgave the man charged in Kirk's death, adding, 'I forgive him because that is what Christ did.' A mother of two, she said she will miss Charlie and that their family remains in her prayers. 'Total surrender' to God's will was how she framed the tragedy, and she urged the crowd to return to church and to renew their commitment to Christ.

In addition to Kirk’s family, a who’s who of conservative leaders spoke at the service. Vice President JD Vance credited Kirk with shaping his own path and pledged continued support for the Turning Point movement. Cabinet members and other senior officials also participated, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. The guest list also included Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, Deputy Director of the FBI Dan Bongino, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin and Small Business Administration head Kelly Loeffler. Elon Musk was seen seated near Trump at times during the program.

Frank Turek, a Christian author who mentored Kirk, gave a firsthand account of Kirk's final moments en route to the hospital after the Sept. 10 shooting at Utah Valley University. He said he was close to the action and described the TPUSA security team driving to the hospital with the SUV door open. 'Charlie’s been like a son to me,' he said, recounting how he and others fought to reach the hospital. Turek recalled the moment when Kirk's eyes were 'fixed' on eternity and said Kirk died almost instantly, without pain.

Approximately 90,000 people attended the public memorial, according to TPUSA. About 70,000 filled State Farm Stadium to capacity, with roughly 10,000 more at overflow venues nearby. The crowd size underscored Kirk's influence within the movement and the broader coalition of faith, youth activism and conservative politics that defined his public life.

Charlie Kirk, 31, founded Turning Point USA to mobilize young conservatives and became a prominent voice in conservative organizing in the United States. His death followed the Sept. 10 shooting at Utah Valley University and prompted a high-profile memorial in Arizona that drew politicians, religious leaders and supporters from across the country.

As the service concluded, Trump returned to the stage to rejoin Erika Kirk, drawing a final round of applause from the audience. The memorial service, held on Sept. 21, 2025, highlighted the blend of political ritual and faith that characterized Kirk's public life and his appeal to a broad coalition of supporters.
