Trump orders troops to Portland to protect ICE facilities

WASHINGTON — President Trump ordered the Department of War to dispatch all necessary troops to Portland, Oregon, to secure the city and safeguard Immigration and Customs Enforcement personnel, he said Saturday. He also warned he was authorizing Full Force if necessary as protests near the federal ICE detention facility in Portland have intensified since June.

At the request of Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, Trump directed Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to provide all necessary troops to protect Portland and ICE facilities under siege from attack by Antifa and other domestic terrorists, the White House said. The president also said he was authorizing Full Force if necessary.

Bondi's announcement came amid a spate of high-profile attacks against ICE officers and a broader push by the Department of Justice to crack down on those who attack federal personnel. On Friday, Attorney General Pam Bondi said the Department would deploy agents to ICE facilities. The Joint Terrorism Task Forces will investigate domestic terrorism and seek the most serious available charges against all participants in the criminal mobs, Bondi wrote on X.

This is the latest sign of a widening federal approach to protests in Portland, where demonstrations outside the ICE facility have drawn steady attention from national lawmakers and civil rights groups alike. The administration has framed the actions as necessary to protect federal workers and facilities, while critics have warned of potential overreach.

Local authorities in Portland have not publicly detailed any new security posture, but federal officials have emphasized coordination with city and state authorities. The events unfold as protests persist in Portland and become a focal point in national politics.

Officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the deployment, and there was no immediate confirmation from the Portland city government about any changes in security posture.
