Trump pressure after Kimmel cancellation raises Fallon spotlight as FCC mulls probe

ABC canceled Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday amid backlash over a monologue and mounting political controversy, drawing a swift response from President Donald Trump who urged NBC to fire Jimmy Fallon. Fallon, who had been scheduled to appear at the Fast Company Innovation Festival in New York City on Thursday morning, canceled his appearance at the last minute, organizers confirmed.

Trump's post on Truth Social attacked NBC as 'Fake News NBC' and pressed for action against Fallon and Seth Meyers, saying their ratings were 'horrible.' The president's comments followed a period of intense scrutiny over Kimmel's on-air remarks related to a murder investigation, which drew criticism from conservatives and some industry voices alike. ABC later said Kimmel's show would be preempted indefinitely, and staff were seen packing up gear at the Los Angeles studio.

ABC's decision to preempt Kimmel's show sent a ripple through the industry. Nexstar Media Group, which operates 23 ABC-affiliated stations, announced it would stop airing Jimmy Kimmel Live! on those outlets, citing that the host's remarks were offensive and insensitive at a pivotal moment in national discourse. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr told Fox News that he was considering an investigation into Kimmel and ABC, describing the conduct as among the 'sickest' he had seen and adding that the commission would evaluate whether the networks were serving the public interest. When asked whether Fallon and Meyers might be targeted, Carr offered a cautious reply: 'We'll see how this plays out.' The episode unfolded as the late-night landscape faces renewed scrutiny from regulators who say they monitor how programming serves the public and engages audiences.

Fallon has previously drawn backlash from some MAGA supporters after a controversial 2016 interview in which he tousled then-candidate Trump's hair. In this latest moment, Fallon’s absence from the festival session came as NBC and ABC faced competing pressures from political figures, regulators, advertisers, and audiences who expect accountability from late-night figures who wield broad cultural influence. The broader context reflects a media ecosystem in transition, with analysts noting a shift in how political content, entertainment, and public-interest obligations intersect in a highly polarized environment.
