Trump Suggests Somali President ‘Take Back’ Ilhan Omar After She Attacked Charlie Kirk’s Legacy
Remarks followed Omar’s criticisms after the Turning Point USA founder was killed; White House aides and lawmakers reacted.

President Donald Trump said in the Oval Office on Thursday that he told Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to “take back” Rep. Ilhan Omar after she criticized Charlie Kirk following the Turning Point USA founder’s murder. Trump told reporters he had met Mohamud, the Somali head of state, and added that he suggested the Somali leader might want to take her back. The comments came as authorities confirmed Kirk, 31, was shot and killed during an outdoor speaking event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10.
Omar’s criticisms of Kirk appeared in the hours after his death. In a conversation with Zeteo, she said that “there are a lot of people who are talking about him just wanting to have a civil debate,” and that those who praised him were “full of s—” and should be called out. She later shared a video on X slamming Democrats and celebrities for “normalizing Kirk,” describing the slain conservative as a “reprehensible human being” and a “stochastic terrorist.” Omar doubled down on her remarks in an appearance on CNN, saying she would not be judged for not honoring Kirk’s legacy and arguing that “that legacy should be in the dustbin of history, and we should hopefully move on and forget the hate that he spewed every day.”
In the White House, the moment drew a mix of reactions among aides and officials, with Vice President JD Vance, FBI Director Kash Patel, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, and other cabinet members seemingly laughing at the quip as the president spoke.
On Capitol Hill, South Carolina Republican Rep. Nancy Mace introduced a measure to censure Omar for “celebrating murder,” but the effort stalled last week when four House Republicans joined Democrats in narrowly opposing it. Separately, Charlie Kirk’s death has been cited in conversations about political rhetoric and violence in the United States.
Kirk was killed during an outdoor event at Utah Valley University. Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old accused of aggravated murder and related charges, was named in initial court filings and is described in reporting as having leftist ideological associations and a transgender boyfriend.
Omar did not respond to The Post’s request for comment. The episode has reignited debate over how comments by public officials and political figures are received in the wake of violent crime, and how cross-border diplomacy intersects with domestic political rhetoric.
